When reviewing a product I'll usually use it at least two to three times before I write my review about it. It usually takes me at least an hour to finish a review, and I generally write it over a period of a few days. This poll is three parts: How many times do you usually use a product before you write your review? How much time do you usually put into your reviews? Lastly, do you sit down and finish a review in one sitting, or do you do it over a period of a couple days?

as far as how many sittings it takes me - it really depends. Like one toy i reviewed in particular that i can think of it took me just about an entire day because I really had to think on certain aspects of it. But when I first joined and reviewed my toys that I have had for 2 years it was easy for me to do it in one sitting.
01/13/2010
also, when i say that i use it three times plus - sometimes it is all in one day. unless I really didn't care for the toy, then I will give it a rest for a day and then come back to it and try it again.

"I use it.." as in how many times I use the toy?

I use it as much as I need to make a decision about it. Honestly, once is usually it. I don't need forever to orgasm so if it hasn't happened in 30 minutes, I'm not going to try harder/longer.

I like to use the product multiple times. I may have a different opinion with different uses. If it is a toy that requires batteries I like to see how long it takes to drain the batteries.
The writing process usually takes around an hour. Give or take a bit. I always do it in one day. Especially because I will lose my train of thought if I break it up or my tone might be different. But hey, whatever works for you.

I selected a lot of different answers. It really depends on the toy.

I'm the only one so far that takes that long to write reviews. It's probably because I'm so critical and am constantly editing.

For BDSM toys? I rarely use them "in scene" if that's what you mean. I'll ask the boyfriend to bend over and I'll try out the toy, then write my review. Maybe a couple times of that before I'll post it. Most toys to use for BDSM would be distracting to review while trying to do a scene, so I try them out-of-scene.

For use I will use it at minimum 2 times...if it sucks both times it isn't getting any better...I really prefer to use a toy at least three times. BUT if I am reviewing a book, well once will do it for me.
I usually take an hour to do a review, but I have a system.
I open the toy and take small notes on the initial item before use.
I use it once and I am usually thinking and it sucks, but I can get a general idea.
I use it a few more times to be sure what I am writing is fair.
I am well organized with how I write so it is a fast process for me really.
As for doing it in one sitting, it depends. I have done some in one sitting, but I have kids and dogs and a husband. I don't have a whole lot of time to sit and write in one session, and if it is on my blog I usually do it throughout the day or come back the mext day while I am alone.

Every review I write takes me a different amount of time. Normally, if I have an hour or two, I'll just sit down, write the entire thing out, and do the proof reading in one sitting. Other times, and probably most of the time, I end up doing the review in sections over a period of a day.

I have a similar kind of system. I use the product take notes on it ranging from packaging to actual use, then I'll use it at least another time. After that I arrange my notes by category, and begin to flesh out the notes into an actual review. Once the review is finished I proof read it once or twice.

I like to usually write it over a couple of days though, because I'll often work on a couple of reviews at a time. But, depending on the review and the product sometimes I'll just sit down and write the whole review in a sitting.

I should probably edit more. I edit after every section (using the extended format) and then I read the whole thing once. But somehow some mistakes always fall through the cracks!
Most of my reviews were for products I have owned for a while (aka I've used them a lot). But I did the Flow review after 2 uses, so I guess it depends.

This thread makes me feel like I spend way too much time trying out toys and writing the reviews. I can't remember if I've ever come close to taking less than 2 hours to write a review. When I see people pump out two or three in a day, I just can't imagine how they do it. But if it only takes them 20-30 minutes, heck, then that's a lot easier.

Depending on how the product works out I might spend more or less time trying it out. I have found that some toys needed to be worked on a bit to be given a fair chance compared to other toys that worked for me off the bat. I don't want to give a toy a bad rating if I have only used it once since after using it a few times you can sometimes find a new way to use it or find a way to use the product that satisfies you.
Usually I will not start my review until I have used the product a few times. No matter what the toy is I prefer using it and making mental notes about it as I go along and write my review later. Sometimes taking your time to review something and really trying the product in all ways imaginable can help me discover new things that work or dont work.
Writing my review is usually pretty long. I will start it one day and correct what was written so far another day and add to it. Then go at it again an other day. It's really a work in progress.

Writing a review takes me very little time and if i can't do it all in one sitting, it's just not going to get done. I write as I think, with little planning or drafting.
Toy use, however, takes me awhile.
After hundreds of toys I know full well that my opinion changes, often from one use to the next. I find new ways to use something, a new technique that may make it better or worse, notice ridges or bumps differently with each use, etc. I dislike writing a review before having used a toy at LEAST four or five times.
I also feel like it's impossible to judge the quality and durability of a toy if you're only using it once, or multiple times in a single day.
What if it burns out tomorrow? What if your mood today is different than next time you want to use it? Sure, there are follow ups but I think it's more fair to fully and completely use that toy we're getting in exchange for a review over more than one day than to have a monster session and spit out a review.
A book or movie? A bit different. But any other product deserves a decent trial before a review is typed up and the customer deserves to know what you thought of it over a bit of time, not in the euphoria of having something "new".
I'm babbling....

I try to use it at least twice before writing my review. The writing process usually takes several hours if not all day. I'm easily distracted so it ends up taking me forever. I've also been known to spend up to an hour trying to write a summary. It's always the hardest part for me and they don't come out that well anyway lol.
01/15/2010
I try to use it as many times as I need before I have a feel for the item and am able to write coherently about it. I personally like to add bits here and there over a couple days before my review is finished. I end up with better reviews this way versus something I just sit down and write in one sitting.

I feel that I have to really be comfortable with the toy before I can write anything about it. I have written about ones I am still feeling out, but I find that when I do that, it takes longer to get my thoughts on paper (or, on screen). When I feel I really know the toy, the review almost seems to write itself.

I use most toys three or four times prior to writing my review. Unless a toy really hits me, I wait a few days prior to using it again. A novelty toy doesn't lend itself to successive uses, for me anyway. In my mind I am always comparing to toys that I have that satisfy me, so I have an idea of intensity, material and comfort.
At times I have to figure out the best position and angle, from multiple uses, to be fair in my evaluation.

At this point I haven't reviewed any toys, just some lingerie and a few edible things. Oh, and one coupon book, lol.
I give it at least one good try. I'll usually come back to it again just before I write the review and I don't think I've written a review yet where I didn't have the item being reviewed sitting right next to me so I could double check things.
I try to sit down and write the whole thing out then go do something else for a little while and wait to see if anything else comes to me that I feel I need to add.
For a product that doesn't seem to work that well right off the bat (like some stockings I reviewed) I do whatever I can to make them work well for me before I start writing the review.

How many times I use before writing a review varies, usually on practicality. Its no challenge for me to use a vibrator a bunch times before post but for a flogger or a toy that requires a partner it can be harder. First because my bottom needs time to heal and second because I only see my boyfriend on weekends. Also, sometimes for anal toys that require a bit of prep I'll only have time to use it a couple times before writing.

I try to use a product at least twice before writing a review. Although I only read a book once. I tend to write out a review long hand then typing it. Which mean I seldom get a review done in one sitting due to the kids.

I like to use the toys a few times..two or three at the least. It's hard to really decide with any less because sometimes my first impressions aren't great. The first couple reviews I did took me 2 hours and then some (lots of some) because I really wasn't sure what I should include and such. I also have to read and re read things over 200 times after I write them (even little things like texts) but I'm getting better and more comfortable which is making things go a lot smoother when I sit down to write them.

I've just written my first review, so things might change as I get more experienced and learn, but in terms of the time it took, about 2 hours in one sitting. I guess it might vary depending on the individual product, how complicated it is, etc.

I would definitely use the product a few times before writing the review, otherwise I'd be writing from first impressions, and those can change.
