I believe they are because it gives a more detailed and visual description of the product.
Are pictures that important in reviews?

To me, pictures are not that important in reviews. I have found that some reviews have needless pictures whereas others take pictures of important attributes. It really depends on the product. Myself, I do not take pictures of my products for privacy reasons however I have been asked to take pictures of lingerie while wearing it, which is really a choice by the reviewer. Go with what you are comfortable with.

Seems like a lot of people give higher ratings to reviews with pictures in them - are pictures that important?

I prefer a review with pictures, but I'm also looking for useful information to go with the pictures.

I disagree. Lingerie fits different parts of the body in different ways, and the fabric can flow, drape, cling, lift, mold, shape, smooth...etc. If a person with good descriptive skills writes a lingerie review, s/he doesn't necessarily need photos to create an accurate mental image.

For things like lingerie, I feel like you need to be able to see the product. A toy you can write about the performance of, but lingerie doesn't really "do" anything...you know?

Pictures are the same way. A picture from every side of the box ... more

Pictures are the same way. A picture from every side of the box that the toy comes in is just pointless. A picture of something that is not international for me is pointless as I have no North America coins to compare with, our pens and markers are of different sizes. Now slap up a passport and I'd be a happy camper.
Picture help to explain a point someone is trying to make.
But.
A review does not need to have pictures in them. If they are there? Great! If they are not there? Great! less
