#Rumble - How interested are you? (everyone's feedback needed)

Contributor: Gary Gary
Hey everyone!

This week we will be starting weekly Rumble #184. I posted the very first Rumble on September 25th, 2009. It is pretty crazy to see that it has last over 3 years now.

With how much the community has grown over the last few years it is kind of disappointing how the lack of participation in the Rumble has actually dramatically decreased. I was thinking that maybe by polling you guys, we could figure out why activity has gone down, and maybe improve things.

Also... if you have ANY suggestions or ideas for improvement, please let me know.

I love the rumbles! For a long time I would just check out the thread and vote, I didn't realize that I could nominate! Once I figured out that I could, I started nominating. I don't get around to it every week, but I try to. I think it's a great part of the community and I would be upset if it were removed. It's gotten me interested in following different contributors, checking out different products, and has always felt amazing when I've been nominated myself. I hope it sticks around!

I honestly love the rumbles! It is a great to catch up on things and meet new people! I only recently noticed I could nominate, so I'll be doing it more often.

I'm not a huge fan. I check them out once in a while, but I have always felt that it can easily just be a weekly popularity contest about the users rather then the quality of the review. I don't follow it closely enough to say that is what's happening... it is just the impression I got of what could happen.

It's always the same people, or seems to be.

I've only checked out the posts occasionally and it didn't look like anything that appealed to me so I have never looked into what it involves or could involve.

I love the review rumbles. It is a good way to showcase the greater reviews each week, but I do think it should be publicized elsewhere somehow.

One idea to improve the Rumble process for me (which would be hard to set up, but make them more "fair") would be a way to check if the voting community member had actually read all of the reviews, instead of just voting for the more popular member. (Yes, by the way.. I am a pessimist and an INTJ, I see flaws in everything. )

I am honestly unsure of what the rumble even is. Maybe you could do some more advertisement for it?

I would agree. I'm been a member for a bit over a year and I can't quite remember what it is. I believe the rumbles are recommending good reviews but I'm not positive.

We don't check it out every single week unless we've come across a particularly great review, in which case we might head over to nominate it if it hasn't already been done and maybe follow the progress of the others. Otherwise it's not a high priority.

I like the Rumble, but sometimes I can't find a review that I really like, then I won't vote.

I like them but forget to nominate. It would be cool to be able to nominate from the review itself somehow.

If the test question was "what is the rumble?" I would fail. I'm not sure what it is.

I forgot to click the second one! I like it! It recognizes those that go above and beyond. I'm going to nominate some now.

Yep. I feel it might more enjoyable if the runner-up was rewarded as well because there have been a few rumbles where the long-term member has edged out over a newcomer (whether because of popularity or simply having the benefit of more experience writing reviews).

I usually try to at least vote and might start nominating reviews now that I'm more comfortable with the site.

Maybe if there was an option listing the eligible reviews (the names of the reviews with links) for the next Rumble, that would encourage more members to nominate (myself included).

EDIT: Are the dates in the intro. post of Rumble #183 correct? I'll nominate a review, but I don't want to waste my time finding one to nominate if the dates are wrong.

I normally only check out whatever is on my wall. So if no one I follow has voted I don't remember to go look at this weeks rumble

The idea of nominating from within a review is a really good one.

As a reviewer I'm interested in this dialog. I've done a ton of good reviews - as measured by the quantity of high review scores that I get. I have been nominated once and didn't win.

IMO EF staff should monitor the stronger reviewers and get them into the mix.

I like it I think it's fun to give people credit for writing awesome reviews. I like Gunsmoke's idea for adding some diversity to the winners pool.

Same here. I used to follow them a while back, but it really is impossible for all the good reviews to get nominated each week.

I'm glad other people are enjoying it, I just don't think it can 100% equitable... so I don't really get too involved with it anymore.

I like the Rumble but, let's be honest, there haven't been all that many nomination-worthy reviews lately.

Nope, the dates aren't right. I went ahead and nominated reviews from this week, as it should be listed. It also isn't marked as a featured thread like it normally is, so I have to keep digging to find it, which is a little offputting.

I used to follow the Rumble every week but stopped awhile back. I just don't feel that it necessarily represents the best reviews each week. I think popularity plays a role, but also seeing the results influences how people vote.

My suggestion, which would unfortunately require more work on the part of Admin, would be for EF to nominate the reviews each week and then have the community vote on those choices. It's still not ideal, but might help.

I've actually made it a point to look into the newer reviewers and nominate when they've impressed me. I'm a little less likely to nominate someone who's been doing this for a while (though if a review blows me away I will), but am more impressed with the newer members that do a great job. So saying it's just a popularity contest isn't entirely accurate. There are a few of us who nominate newer contributors.

I too never realized you could nominate for a long time.

I don't like it when too many reviews are posted at once (more than say 5). Most people aren't going to take the time to read 7-8 reviews and it would be hard to pick ONE winner out of those anyway.

I think 3-4 is a good #.
It's nice that anyone can nominate, but there should maybe be a small group of admins/Sr contributors that screen it down to the final 3-4, if any are not in the same league as the top few.

There is that element of popularity, but that may just be human nature? More objectivity would be good though.

I was lucky enough to win one, which I never thought would have been possible when I first started reviewing, so I think it is a good thing to aspire to.
