Politics controls what you can do, whom you can do it with, what you get paid, what kinds of jobs are available, what kinds of roads you drive on, what your taxes are... in basic everything in your life.
I honestly think its irresponsible to not stay at least somewhat updated on what's going on in politics. The rights you lose WILL be your own, if you aren't paying attention. And there are forces out there (political forces) who COUNT on young people NOT paying attention, so they can surreptitiously take away rights without being noticed.
You lose when you don't pay attention. We ALL lose when you don't pay attention.
It isn't that hard to do a little research to make sure your country stays free and the things YOU believe in stay or become legal.
You can't stand up for what you believe is right, if you don't know WHAT is going on and WHO is in charge and HOW to reach or stop them.
In our family, our kids are schooled in politics from the time they are toddlers. (I taught my next door neighbor, who was a baby at the time to yell 'BAMA!' during the last election. His parents thought it was hilarious, and his little vote was heard!)
You have to be aware to either make changes or to make sure things that are right are not taken from you. less

WELL SAID. I was about to go on a long diatribe, but you just eloquently spelled it all out. THANKS. It scares me...deeply, to see people say "I don't care about politics", since it does and will touch us all, daily, in the most serious ways.

Nope. No representative and presidential is 90% one way in my area.
Yes, I registered when I was 18 and have voted in all November elections and most primaries. I am disheartened by the cynicism of "my vote doesn't count." My state is a good example of why you should vote. Indiana always always always goes republican in presidential elections. Last year, there was a huge turnout of younger voters, and Indiana went democrat for president for the first time since 1964. Change is possible.

Yes.
Funny. Just the other day at my college, the voter registration people were out and about and asking students to register - ie: jumping on anyone with a backpack or wearing casual clothes.
Girl: "Are you registered to vote?"
Me: "I have been for fifteen years."
Girl: O_o "I was a toddler ... "
Me: -_- "Yeah. Keep recruiting."

Yes and I am ready to vote now. This election has been stressful. Lot of hateful comments. I don't care which side one is on, I don't understand the need for all these rude remarks. Can't we just get alone? LOL I know that old saying but seriously. I wish the campaign was only 6 weeks long. Feels like this has been going on forever.
10/19/2012
Yep and already voted this year.

I agree with this. Not paying attention because you aren't interested is incredibly irresponsible. Politics are your life and how you are permitted to live it. It matters, even if you think it's pointless. And yes, there are people who count on those who don't pay attention in order to manipulate the system. This is actually important.
