If you pass a cop that is running radar, do you flash your lights to warn oncoming drivers?
When driving, do you flash your lights to forewarn oncoming drivers of a parked cop running radar?

I knew someone who got pulled over himself for flashing his lights for this reason, so I don't want to be stuck in that situation. In general, unless it is a small-town speed trap, I like seeing people getting pulled over by the cops.

I never knew anybody who got pulled over for it, but I've heard stories about it. As far as I'm concerned, if you're speeding, that's against the law, and you deserve the ticket if you get caught. I speed, I've gotten a speeding ticket, when I got pulled over, I told the officer right away that I knew I was speeding and I wasn't going to argue him over any speeding ticket he was going to write me.

I drove truck for a living. The only time I flashed my lights was to tell a truck in front of me that he was clear to change lanes. To me, if you are speeding, you deserve the ticket. It's an unsafe practice.

I almost never drive anymore, but when I did I never would flash my lights. I've also never known anyone who got pulled over for it, but I'm just really cautious/a worry wort about those sorts of things.

Nope. If you are speeding, and are unaware enough to not see the cop yourself, you deserve the ticket. A cop will pull you over for flashing your brights. They cannot write you a ticket for warning of their presence, but flashing your brights is illegal if other vehicles are present. It is a potential hazard to other drivers and can cause an accident. Those people deserve tickets too.
I've only been pulled over once and thus received one ticket. I was knowing speeding and saw the cop. I did not slow down because it was an emergency. I broke the law. I took the ticket. I could have flashed a badge, dropped a name, asked for my free pass, or told him of my situation and would most likely gotten out of it, but I didn't. It really irks me when people try to get out of things like that.

That's the same way I was taught. So that's the only time I flash them.

Reading that back, I wasnt clear. I only flash my lights to let a truck know that it's clear, not to warn speeders.

I used to do it when I first started driving, but not anymore. A lot of people don't pay attention anyways, so who is to say they even see me flashing my high beams.
02/16/2011
As long as I know the cop can not see me, I will.
02/16/2011
We'll usually flash them, if we're far enough past the cop. A lot of people do it on the highway.
02/16/2011
I don't, if I see someone else do it I will make sure I slow down if I am speeding.
I hate people who drive with their brights on or who even flash them so I don't do that to others. It has nothing to do with it being illegal or whatever, just my own personal annoyances.

I flash them sometimes for a cop warning, but I flash them everytime for a deer/animal warning. We get a lot of deer around here, and sometimes even the occasional moose, and I like to warn people if I've noticed anything lurking around the roads. I've flashed my lights at cop cars before to warn them. They mostly understand around here. I've never been pulled over for it.
And I completely agree with Sam. If you're speeding and get pulled over, you deserve the ticket. It's happened to me, I didn't complain, and she was nice enough to lower the fine

I have been pulled over for it and I told them someone had their brights on
02/16/2011
I had to vote 'sometimes' because I think I've done it once or twice before. I haven't in a long time; I forgot that was even a thing!

This never even occurred to me, but I'd be inclined to do it if I ever thought it would help anybody. Where I come from, traffic laws are safety hazards and a source of revenue, not regulations designed to protect people. At least, they're not enforced in a way that protects anybody, and apparently they don't apply to cabs.
02/17/2011
I never do that unless someone has their brights on and I am being blinded. Also I rarely go by cops running radar in my area, so not much of an issue for me.
02/17/2011
I only flash my lights if some jerk off is coming towards me on a two lane road with his brights on. I always turn mine off which is what you are supposed to do.

lol to the "apparently they don't apply to cabs" And it does seem that a lot of the radar traps just get in the way.

My dad is a truck driver and I picked up this habit too. It makes me sad when some of them don't flash their tail lights back at me to thank me.

More so than flashing my lights to warn of a cop, I flash my lights to warn of moose or bear in the road or along the roadside.

Just to clarify my "poll vote", which said I usually flash my lights at people, I only flash them if the person is being a responsible driver. If I see someone speeding in some $80,000 car, I tend to enjoy seeing them pulled over. But if I see someone in a normal car, doing maybe 10-15 over the limit, I'll usually flash my lights. I DO NOT support speeding. As a firefighter that has been to quite a few car crashes, I encourage people to drive safely, not talk or text on their phones, and not go too far over the speed limit.

I never flash my lights. But maybe that is because my brother in law is a Deputy Sheriff. There's been too many times where someone speeding has almost hit him going down the road. My brother in law is a pretty awesome cop though, he'll usually let people off with a warning the first time he catches them..
Didn't happen to that poor city boy though who was doing 80 in a 55 down the road my brother in law lived on.. Mainly because he decided to smart off to the cop.

I never do because I don't really think about it. *shrug*

Only in a certain city. The officers are especially uptight and I feel sorry for anyone who gets flaggd by them. They use minor offenses to issue major citations. I get the same feeling when an ump calls a strike and everyone knows it's a ball.

If the cop is being sneaky, then I try to flash my lights. I feel cops should be out stopping dangerous criminals, not hiding trying to catch someone going 5 miles over the speed limit. I know that both times someone has hit my car, I tried to get a cop to come out and write a report. But I could never get one, they where all busy. The one time a high school girl hit my company truck, I thought she might have been alittle drunk, or playing with her phone. I guess they were all out handing out speeding tickets that day.

I live in New Zealand. If people flash their lights it might mean that there's a speed camera ahead... or it might mean that there's stock in the middle of the road.
I was once driving down a rural road and flashed at a guy (who was obviously a real estate agent, based upon the signwriting on his car). He simply waved and honked in a friendly manner, obviously returning the "greeting" thinking that I knew him... and then immediately swerved in a panic to miss the cow that I'd been warning him about! It helps to keep an eye on where you're going, genius.

Usually I forget. I try to remember if I see a deer or other large animal by the road.
