What would you do if tech support leaked your nude photos? (Based on a true story)

I would press charges...THEN I would sue the shit out of Dell for not handling this IMMEDIATELY! We're talking like 2 mill for sheer stupidity.

Then I would go on like Oprah or something and start a HUGE thing with Dell and be sure everyone bought something else.

This is why I won't touch a Dell with a 10 foot pole.

Dell has the WORST customer service reps I've ever dealt with. They deserve to have a huge lawsuit about this blown up all over the media. I hope she sues them for all she can.

That's awful, but I've had nude photos all over the internet, so I'd not care much personally

It depends on how far in you get it. I would make sure there was no pain killers involved.

The correct thing to do would be to call the police, or better yet the FBI, immediately. When blackmail comes up, there is no bargaining, and no way to guarantee that the blackmailer won't keep asking for more and more. The victim has three choices -- pay up, and be prepared to pay up again and again for life; ignore the threat and just let the blackmailer carry out the threat; or call law enforcement immediately. Whatever decision you make in those first few panicked minutes is the decision you're stuck with, quite possibly for life.

I stopped buy Dell computers years ago, after they moved their tech support to India. This is just plain evil.

I would have pressed charges ASAP with both that individual tech support guy as well as the company (for not doing something about it) and anyone else involved.

I mean, if I saw a fraudulent charge of $800 on my credit card bill, the first thing I would have done would be to call the credit card company to have it stopped and reported that as a theft to the police (since someone did steal her info).

There's just *so* many points in time where she could have stopped it and called the police and didn't. I'm not blaming the victim, but there comes a time and place when you *need* to advocate for yourself and she just didn't until so much stuff had occurred.

The guy's in India. Be realistic - sad as it may be, nothing's going to happen. Dispute the charge, lodge a complaint and move on is probably all you can do.

She can go ahead and try (and probably should), but don't count on anything.

Last week, I was on the phone with tech support in India. The guy asked if he could take over my computer to take care of the problem, I said No, so he gave me instructions as I did the work. Took longer but was safer.
I just wont give up control to anyone....With computers, that is....

Who wouldn't press charges? And I'm sorry, I'm not computer savvy enough I suppose, but if she lost them on her computer, how did he download them on his? On his work computer at that? And he isn't in trouble for this? Anytime I've called a tech support center the place sounds packed. Funny how he could get away with this so easily.

I'm savvy enough with my computer to do what I want with my pics/film and then delete them or name them obviously enough to easily find them with a search My entire computer is password protected after my sis used it while I was asleep and ended up snooping through my last conversation with my guy (I was dumb for leaving the convo open, but she knows that her touching my computer is like me touching her phone...) Thankfully, my guy has a Mac like me, and we know how to let him see and control the screen in case anything like that happened. Worst case, I could go to my dad (I might get a look, but I'd rather do that than call tech support.)

I can't view the article anymore, but I think this is why it's best to know how to do stuff pretty well with your computer before putting such sensitive info on it (same goes for storing passwords and such in documents). And if a tech support person wanted to control my computer, I'd want to make sure I have control of the mouse as well (in most cases I've seen, when someone remote accesses a computer, someone physically controlling the computer overrides the remote access if they both do something at the same time.) At the same time, when I call tech support, I expect some respect for privacy... I should be able to trust them infinitely more with my computer than a friend who just wants to check Facebook.

Worst case, I think it's best to either have backup versions of important files and applications, so you can just wipe your computer if there's an emergency. Or be ok with having to replace everything yourself...

How devastating! Oh my. That would have to cause a poor girl to be traumatized! I would leak it to the media, I'd be writing to the newspaper, hell, I'd write a BOOK about it and make sure it was published. I would include the guy's name and would not stop until his life was miserable. I'd definitely do everything in my power to get my hands on him! Jail wouldn't even be enough justice for someone like that. Poor girl must've been terrified. That is so pathetic. Man, I hope with everythign I have that he's put away.

I wouldn't have cared less if the guy posted nude photos of me on the internet. Any attempts at blackmail would've landed on deaf ears. However, I would still have at least attempted to go over there and beat the living daylights out of that guy. Failing that, I'd just report it to the police.

I have to agree with one readers response that any time the camera snaps and you naked its probable that those pics will get out. I once lost a nearly brand new camera that fell out of my truck when a friend got out and she swept it out by accident with her pant leg (our best guess). The first 10 or so pics on it were of me getting fucked on the dining room table complete with a couple nice full body spread shots of me totally naked sporting my creampie. Oh well... Its the risk I take and in my case I'm ok with it. If your not then dont ever pose and it reduces the risk.

That being said... as killing him is impractical due to his location and probably a pain in the ass in the long run... I would file the complaint with Dell first. The next a hard part to swallo will be that the FBI will have to initiate an investigation do to the international and nature of the crimes. This will also lead to INTERPOL getting involved - which is all fine but may draw a lot of attention you dont want. But if you want justice you may have to go for it. You could sue Dell on a civil action but that might be expensive and worse you could loose. Civil action againsy him is more difficult as hes not a US Citizen and not here....

Remember there a billions of naked pics on the net...on millions of porn sights.... odds of anyone finding them especially by accident are not really high. And though not really a comfort... ok so you were naked... not like a measurable percentage of the world population isnt right thete with you.

As for the next time... dont ever agree to negotiate with criminals or hostage takers... you will always loose. Try to diffuse it while your in initial contact by saying go ahead - hell please do - i post myself up all the time doing worse then that. Try to make them think what they have has no threat or value over you. And just hang up on them. Very little of what you say or do otherwise from that point will change what they will ultimately do. Dont give the prick the satisfaction of knowing its really getting to you.

Good luck and I'm super sorry....I woud remember all of this when it comes time to buy a new computer. Last thought... if you know the sight he put them on contact them directly and ask them to take them down. Might work. Might not. Once its up its reallllllllly hard to find every place it went to delete it....
