What's your relationship with smoking?

Contributor: Sephymuffins Sephymuffins
Maybe I'm just strange, but I really like the entire act of smoking. I like the way cigarettes taste, I like the way they smell. It's kind of bad. I've been smoking for the past couple of months but I haven't smoked in a few days! It's hard, only because I associated smoking with certain things.

I'm withdrawing pretty bad, but whatever. I'll get over it. I don't want to smoke anyway, because my Daddy stopped smoking and I don't want him to be disappointed in me if I do smoke.

In case this helps anyone trying to quit - my husband tried many times unsuccessfully. What finally worked was for him to plan a week long camping trip in a location far from any town, purposely making it very inconvenient to get to a store to buy cigarettes. The beautiful scenery distracted him enough to make it easier to be without cigarettes. In fact he said he didn't even want them.

Once home he still didn't want them. Its the only thing that worked for him.

I can't believe I married a smoker. That would be such a deal breaker for me now.

Watching my neighbor slowly die of lung cancer, coughing 24/7, looking 20 years older than he was had a big impact on myself and my sibs. None of us smoke even though our parents did.

Distraction is a big key to quiting, I think. If you don't think about it, you can go longer than you realize.

sounds like a great quitting plan!

Yes - distraction and being away from the situations where you usually smoke.

my parents are smokers. my dad finally did quit, and he ended up going cold turkey to do it. my mom still smokes, and it is nasty, IMO.

Neither my husband nor I smoke, and it will definitely stay that way. Cigarette smoke gives me a headache.

I was torn on the answer because while I do smoke more than 10 a week, I don't cough every morning. I know I should quit and my big problem is that I really only smoke while I drive, but I got a job as a driver, lol. It takes me about a month and a half or so to get through a carton, which I don't think is all that bad in the grand scheme of things, because I know people that will go through a carton a week.

I'm glad to see that quitting is working for you so far

Always being the odd one out, I'll admit that I smoke and have no desire to quit. I won't even start a debate as to why, but we'll just call it my personal choice.
Alan quit some time back, but started up again recently because he missed it. That morning cigarette just gets you going like some peoples' morning coffee does (which we both despise). However, neither one of us will smoke the chemical-laden mainstream cigarettes.

yeah, MI just passed a law that required companies to put rings of a chemical in their cigs so they don't burn down and start fires. That chemical: carpet glue.

NO THANK YOU!

FYI: Still an ex-smoker

I only smoke cigars when I am drinking and nothing else when I'm not.

Um..other, I guess?

I only smoked for a couple years and it was only maybe 2-3 a day and a lot more when I drank. My boyfriend wanted me to quit and I kept stopping then starting again. One St.Patrick's Day, I got plastered and must've had at least a full pack throughout the night and I got sick (whether form the cigs or the booze, I'm not sure). So now even the smell or the taste of smoke in someone else's mouth makes me sick to my stomach. Sucks cause I'll occasionally want to smoke, but can't.

One last thought, I can still smoke cigars occasionally and sheesha from a hookah. Thank god, I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't smoke the hookah. We only bust out the hookah on special occasions.

I have this bad habit of starting back up during finals. Or sometimes when I'm drinking (those like 2 or 3 times a year haha), depending on the crowd I'm with at the time.

I don't smoke in front of my son ever, just at work, at school, and sometimes outside after he's asleep.

I forgot about the Hookah. I like to do that when I get the rare occasion to. I have a best friend who is really into it and so I do it with him from time to time. He mixes his own flavors and they are amazing!

Grew up with a father who smoked ... then an ex-step-father (who made me go on cigarette runs for him when we lived in Kansas City back in the mid-80's - my mother tore him a new one when she found out) ... and an ex-step-mother ... then hung around teenage friends who smoked ... then dad came back, still smoking ...

I never started. I had plenty of opportunity, but it just never appealed to me. (It might have been from being in those permanent nicotine fogs at the AA/NA meetings my parents took me to.) I figured second-hand smoke will kill me.

My ex-husband never smoked. After finally being out of my parents' house when I married I began to notice that no matter how many times or ways I washed my blanket, it STILL smelled like nicotine. The laundry area was in the den and the den was my dad's room ... so you can see how the smell got embedded. I was quite gleeful when my ex-husband took that damn blanket with him when we seperated. Now I've moved into the den (my dad has my old bedroom) and it's beginning to smell like a normal room again (I will also gleefully tear out the carpet someday).

I channeled all my addictions into food. :-/

I'm a 'never have, never will'. Even if I had the desire to, or could afford it for that matter, I have really bad asthma and my lungs start spasming just being around smoke some days.

I'm looking forward to quitting again. I was ok for about 5-6 months. Something came up in May and *SLIP* I was smoking again. I don't like that I started up again. I'm not smoking any more than I used to, but still about <1/2 pack. I can spread it out to a couple a day though.

I'm asthmatic and highly sensitive to cigarette smoke. I think I'd suffer an attack and die on my first puff!

Mr. Sauce, good luck! My Man smokes (outside, I can't stand it) and he was able to quit while taking Chantix. It worked, but his mother told him it was "off the market, because it will make you want to kill yourself" (which is totally untrue) and he stopped taking it and immediately went back to smoking.

I think the Chantix worked really well, but he was scared off of it, despite my protestations that the drug was relatively safe for him. *sigh*

Keep up the good work.

I've personally never smoked.......tobacco

I'm a singer. So smoking is a no, no for me.

...Buuutt....When I'm drinking, I tend to smoke as well, and during times of high stress (like the stress of suddenly going from singing all the time during school to working as a waitress 40+ hours a week for the summer) I tend to smoke more. Still occasionally, but when I get out of work sometimes, or during work, I find myself really needing a cigarette.

Mostly a habit thing for me. Stick me in a house for a long weekend, I'll be perfectly fine. Stick me in a car driving all over the place? I hope I remembered my smokes, lol.
