I have degrees in Psychology and Child Development. No jobs. Really, unless you want to work in a Day Care center or Mental Health Hospital, which I have done and don't ever want to do again.

I also am an IBCLC, which is a Master's Level Certification in Lactation Nursing. I help women breastfeed their babies, give classes, write articles etc. I have my own business, but business is VERY bad with the economy. As more hospitals get "Lactation Nurses" (many of whom have no training or very little and most of whom spend very little time with their patients due to time constraints) those of us in Community Work are left with only the clients who persisted when the 10 minutes the LC in the hospital gave them didn't help. As of late, the business is changing and is very SLOW.

I have no desire to work in a hospital again. The....constriction and stuntedness (is that a word) and Conservative nature of so much of the Administration and many of the staff in most hospitals is suffocating. I'm at a loss at present.

Right now, I'm a delivery driver and I work nights at a bank. After my wedding this winter I'm going to start looking for something I can turn into something resembling a career, although with a degree in interior design and no desire to use it, I might just be up a creek without a paddle, lol

Yep, the owners wife did lots of repairs on chaps, coats, gloves etc., so she taught me lots of sewing and leather work. I just loved making stuff out of leather, from knife cases to a couple bikini style tops.

My next job was for a trim shop, mostly cars, trucks and bikes but we did do some furniture in the winter months.

I only got it because it's my university library. They only hire students for lower level jobs and MA is needed for high level jobs.

It's definitely better than retail!

I'm so glad you had a good experience. Some women just breeze through it. It makes me happy to see this. How is the little one doing? 10 months is a really fun age.

I burnt out on working Mental Health after years in Mental Health Peds. I think it's better to leave a sub-specialty than to burn out and maybe not do your best by your patients. It was also too much to see mentally ill or damaged children all day and then come home to my own kids. Too close for comfort. When I start crying on a daily basis, because of what's happening at my job, it's time to change something.

My dictionary now has a leather studded collar on it, Okay?

Just curious - how do end up with a degree in a field you have no interest in? I ask because my daughter is considering the study of interior design. Any insight you can offer is appreciated.

Usually by parents saying "YOU HAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE - NOW PICK SOMETHING!" So even though you don't have any direction at this point you pick something that sounds interesting, but you quickly lose interest because it doesn't feel right.

(I drifted my first time in college and got nearly everything for my General AA expect for math and languages. When you're told 'Go to college and get a degree' there has to be an actual direction to go in that you [the student] can live with. Some of us find our direction MUCH later than everyone else.)

Chillipepper - I'm sorry to hear of your experience.

But my question was specific to Jul!ia's comments about interior design. I'm not trying to tell her what to do - just to help her discover something she can enjoy and make a decent living doing.

Good luck

There are so many different reasons that people choose to get a certain degree, it surprises me. Several people I know go into a certain field for the money, while others--like me--go into something because it's the one thing they really love.

I chose to get a degree in Culinary Arts not because I want to own my own restaurant and be the next Emeril, but because it has been something I have been fascinated and consumed by for the past 6 years. I love school, and I love learning, especially learning about something I have a true passion for.

Although those friends that chose to go into a certain field, like Human Resources or Accounting, for the money... I want to do something that will fulfill and flourish within my heart, not just my bank account. That is what I would advise your daughter to do. Follow her heart. If she really loves interior design, that's great! But she shouldn't go into it thinking she will become Hollywood's Best Interior Designer--although she could be!

I hope that helped... at all.

I am Biology major Pre Med. I wanted to be a dietitian (it's easy stuff for me), but I absolutely hate the only school in my state to offer it. So I'm sticking to the fun doctor classes I like to take and will go to Med school to be a PA is how it's looking. Just to get a job to help support all that schooling is going to be the "fun" part.

My sister and best friend is getting their degree in Culinary Arts only because they love cooking.
What do you do if you do not want to own your own restaurant with that degree?

I had that happen to me. Switched last minute, but there's nothing that has really truly interested me, so I've been stuck doing manual labor jobs at low low pay.
