I kind of hate that fact.

It's 2012, our cunt's, our pussy's, our love canals are much more than a shelter for a mans junk.

I hate that is is still the only socially acceptable work for what we have down below.
Thank goodness someone else agrees, and I didn't come off as an over-reacting fem. lol. I also find it a bit insulting.

Elnoa, I'm telling you, read "Cunt" it is a bit far from my usual comfort zone, but it is mind boggling and an important book for women.

I'm no "femme nazi" but seriously, this cuntlovin' woman has some amazing ... more

It's new to me. I knew that vanilla had the same etymology as vagina though, which amused me.

Indeed it makes sense.

But should it?
Does it make sense because of the society we live in?

If the world was composed of solely females, and we were self reproductive, meaning no penis required, I highly doubt we would call our ... more
Think of it this way:

Language is something that evolves over time. It's not immutable and completely unchanging. Even though the original Latin definition may be "sheath for a sword," nowadays it simply refers to an anatomical part, and this is what most people use the word for.

My joking comment about scabbards aside, I personally see no reason to suddenly start thinking automatically of "sheath" every time I hear "vagina." The old meaning has died off - this has happened time and again ever since humans began speaking, and will continue to happen probably for as long as our species lives.

As much as I agree about not really wanting my bits to be thought of as just something that a penis goes into, I think it has more to do with the anatomy and the shape than it does with the euphemism of penis as a sword. Lots of names for body parts are derived from their shape rather than their function.like the hippocampus in the brain, named because it is shaped like a seahorse. The vagina is shaped much like the sheath of a sword.

I was just thinking this. Latin is an ancient language. Many of the ancients, especially in Rome, Greece and other places in the Mediterranean and the Middle East (where Latin was spoken years ago) had a very heavily patriarchal societal system.

As Latin is a "Dead Language" I'm not all that upset about a word that was defined thousands of years ago.

It's not like those of us who have sex with men let them keep their "swords" in our "sheaths" when they aren't using them.
