The US military will now allow women in combat - good idea?

Contributor: spiced spiced
I have mixed feelings. As RonLee pointed out, women have been serving in de facto combat roles for some time. But they haven't been getting combat pay, which is completely unjust and, as indiglo rightly pointed out, this puts career military women at a severe disadvantage. Now, women who want to serve in combat units and have what it takes can do so. Seen from this angle, it's a no-brainer good thing.

BUT--right now it's completely voluntary. There's no draft and only women who volunteer for combat duty will be assigned to it. What happens when that changes? When there's a draft again (notice I said when, not if), will women be assigned to combat units whether or not they want to be assigned? Part of me says "equal rights = equal responsibilities" but part of me is not so sure...

If someone is willing to sign up to join the military then they should be willing to go into combat, no matter their gender. I never could understand the mentality of "woman can't handle it." There's plenty of men that can't handle it either and I know there is plenty of woman who could handle it. But that's just what I've always thought. I remember being shocked when I found out woman couldn't be in combat. I always assumed that if you joined the military and war happens you'll be in combat. It's what you signed up for.

I think it is a bad idea because as soon as one gets taken hostage and is molested or raped while captive there will be a lawsuit of some kind saying "it wouldn't have happened if you didn't pass this!"

I'm in favor of it. If you don't think women are able to handle combat, read about the female soviet snipers of WW2.

Women have been fighting in positions of combat without being called "Combat Positions" for decades. And MANY of those women have been captured and held as Prisoners of War already. During their captivity, MANY of those women were also sexually assaulted.

While it sucks, this kind of thing has already been happening for decades.

I'm not so sure it's such a good idea. women & men are different in many ways & I think this is one of those areas.
