I have mixed feelings. As RonLee pointed out, women have been serving in de facto combat roles for some time. But they haven't been getting combat pay, which is completely unjust and, as indiglo rightly pointed out, this puts career military women at a severe disadvantage. Now, women who want to serve in combat units and have what it takes can do so. Seen from this angle, it's a no-brainer good thing.
BUT--right now it's completely voluntary. There's no draft and only women who volunteer for combat duty will be assigned to it. What happens when that changes? When there's a draft again (notice I said when, not if), will women be assigned to combat units whether or not they want to be assigned? Part of me says "equal rights = equal responsibilities" but part of me is not so sure...
