Yup, that is one of the issues at hand. As you know, this has been going on for some time, even before points started. I am positive we can work together to find a solution that will at least help out.

Seriously???

Wow.

I know I am only speaking for myself here, but I am sorry people took you voting honestly too close to heart. I have become much more strict when voting a review since becoming an Editor as I've been reading reviews for some products I'd never think of buying. Out of all the reviews I've read, I think there might be two that I found useful, and maybe one that I found extremely useful.

I personally want to say thanks to you for voting honestly based on the information and the lack of information provided.

And off I go to finish reading this thread!!!

You bring up another great point. The search function does is not always the best and even when it does bring up what you are looking for it can be hard to sift through all the threads. I mean really, there are over 41,000 thread right now. That is a mess of reading, I too would not always want to sift through it all.

Thanks RickNStephy

You know to this sort of situation??? I've been in the same boat. And I have to chuckle, because I get no replies on them.

I think I've done new threads like this twice and both times I shrugged and thought, you know, I'd still post these thread even if I were not getting points.

I think it boils down to who you are and what you want to accomplish here at EF. For me I want to learn how to spell properly. Either that or get a new keyboard. Bottom line is, I say post and don't feel bad especially if you would still post those posts if you got no points for that post.

I agree.. Honestly, I have been guilty of telling people it's already been discussed and posting the link to it.

I hadn't thought of it that way, and I would hate to scare someone new away.
This was good post and definitely something worth reading entirely though.
Also, glad you are not running away.

Now this was a good read!! Thanks Tim (times three) for bringing this up.

You've made a heck of a lot of good points throughout this thread, as has everyone.

But I don't think there is a sure way to deal with it as some folks have mentioned, EF is constantly evolving.

I know I am guilty of reading the main page and just skipping over a lot of the new threads that look obvious of "which do you like better" just because I'd rather spend my time reading posts like this, or posts that make me think and have to prepare a response. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I will reply to those threads, just not often.

Yes, this does kind of make me a "forum snob" I know.

But my brain is fried and I think I need some sleep!!! I'll be back to finish this thought!!!

I am not a normal person by far, but for many, I would think that a;

"This topic has already been discussed, please use the search function" or "please read the reviews on the product"

would be very different from;

"Your question was discussed here (insert link) and here (insert link), maybe you might find your answer there."

You are still providing some assistance in answering their question or comparison.

Awe, I missed a good conversation. Thank you Tim for posting this. I agree completely with you.

I have seen some comments on the threads where I can see how the OP could easily be scared right off. I know I have been guilty of making comments and not all of them in a positive and welcoming way. (I know you weren't pointing fingers at me, but I'll point them at myself.) Honestly, lately I have been avoiding the forums. Every time I go there to comment, I can't seem to find a thread that can't be answered within the first few posters.

I wish that the topics for the forum would go to an editor, so they could be researched. If the question was found then it wouldn't be posted, but the editor could tell the OP here is the links to the topics. And if the question could be answered easily... like how do a post a poll...then the editor could handle that as well. An editor could make sure it is being placed properly and everything. I really think that needs to be set up.

I completely agree. One of my first posts was welcomed with a comment similar to: "We already talked about this. Do a search next time." Fortunately, I have a pretty thick backbone and it didn't push me away but I can imagine it would've done that for others.

Bravo Tim.

Thanks for your thoughts. I bet we have all been like that once or twice. Probably human nature and all. I will go so far as to say that we only have good intentions, unfortunately we may not always think things through first.

I can only hope that this serves as a lesson to ALL of us to think first, post second.

I started reviewing here 5 years ago and have seen a ton of changes some for the better and some for the worse. When I started, there were just a handful of reviewers, most of whom are gone now. I think many of them got frustrated because of what fruatrates me as well. This program can sometimes be a bit of a popularity contest, unfortunately. I love this community but when people like Lori can't vote or comment honestly for fear of retribution, that's a big problem.

Glad you stuck around. I agree that folks can be clicky at times. And yes, when folks are afraid of voting or posting stuff, it defeats the whole purpose of the site.

We should all feel welcome and be able to say what we want without fear. Kind of the whole point of the EF philosophy.

Yeah, that's the reality of human nature - we're naturally drawn towards individuals who share similar personality traits. But, I really find that I can talk to just about anyone on here, even before I started working here.

I agree with this completely. Like Gary had mentioned in one of his threads, it really is hard to tell whether a person is just new, or is point farming. I think the whole point farming thing has gotten really out of hand. I know your thread is about forum point farming but I also find that more and more people are complaining about how people are point farming by saying "thank you" on their reviews. I mean, really? That's just silly (in my opinion of course).

I don't want to sound jerky but isn't is really easy to skip past the "obvious post farming stuff". I mean, if a title looks unappealing to a user, they could just not click it. Even if they did click it, it's super easy to click right back out of it?

Okay, now that I've responded to various posts in this thread, I'll respond to the main one lol..

Tim, I agree completely with you. I'll admit, sometimes I'll say "there are some reviews on the product which give great information on *such and such*". That's usually when I can't give my own opinion though because I don't own or have tried the product. I never reply with the intention to not be welcoming. I usually try and be super nice. I hope no one has ever taken my comments in a mean way.

If I think a post is point-farmy, then I usually just don't reply at all and skip it.

I don't want people to get upset by me saying this but I think that there are just as many complaint threads as there are "point-farmy" threads and like you said Tim, how do we even know they are trying to point-farm? Maybe they're just new and don't know there way around yet, etc. A lot of members are saying that they don't visit the forums as often anymore because of all the "spammy" threads or whatever. Honestly though, I've been coming here less (on the forums) because there seems like an over abundance of bitching, complaining, whining threads. That to me is unwelcoming and negative and it's annoying to see thread after thread being about how people don't like how people set lures, don't like how people say "thank you" on their reviews instead of long paragraphed comments, don't like pictures in reviews, blah blah blah.

I know I probably sound jerky, and I hope no one hates me now because of this but I'm sure there are a few others who feel the same. I can't be the only one!

I think that most folks just don't like seeing the main page full of these types of threads. I agree with both side's, I just skip them when I can. On the other hand I know I have missed a good thread or two because of it.

Exactly! There was one comment on one of my reviews that said, "yay" and that was it. I was like, "ummm... yay what?" If someone posts something that totally doesn't make any sense, then maybe a person could be like, "are they point farming?" but a "thank you"? That sort of makes sense to me. I dunno
