I agree a laptop would be the better option. I don't see why they would pick the Ipad? But my guess is that it's the latest thing in technology that whoever "they" are decided will be the next big thing like computers.

I'm more than happy to get a laptop for learning because I do believe kids need to know how to use technology. Given that iPads are both delicate AND expensive, I don't see why a laptop wouldn't be required instead.

Seriously? That's fucking retarded. I didn't even have a cell phone until I was like 18.

"They" can shove it. LOL I have an iPad and love it, but it's not a replacement for my laptop by any stretch of the means.

That is what I have heard about Ipad's which is why I can't see why they would pick Ipad's. Unless it's because they don't want some kids coming in with $1000 laptops and some with $250 laptops, so everyone's is the same? "They" can surely shove it!

Wow, Apple must have been lobbying hard for this.

I agree that children should be given every available opportunity to use technology available to them. This is part of the reason why we're in a slump globally. Technology advanced so quickly that it put labor-intensive jobs off the market as redundant/unnecessary but there aren't enough people educated properly to fulfill the new roles we need. We weren't prepared.
Still, there are many other devices available on the market that can do what an iPad does.

If Apple want kids to have their products for school, perhaps they should donate them to schools. I know Bill Gates/Microsoft has a program to help schools get Windows PCs for student use.

All this talk about iPads at school is making me feel old. The only computers my elementary school had were in the computer lab, and they were Apple IIs.

That's ridiculous! In our neighborhood, at least 25% of the families don't even have one computer between all of them. How the hell are people supposed to come up with that kind of money?
I'd certainly complain. What's wrong with a laptop? Or if the school is so concerned, why don't they buy the computers and let the children use them? Why do they only allow one brand?

We have a grant here, the school requires the students to have a certain laptop but they furnish them. As a parent all we have to pay is $25 each for insurance. I have 3 kids in highschool this year, no way I could afford an Ipad for all of them.
07/30/2012
That seems really insensitive since clearly not everyone can afford an iPad for their kids. Even worse when you consider how many people have multiple kids. One iPad is expensive, but three or four?
07/30/2012
What? That is just crazy.
I wouldn't buy anything like that for a kid. No way. Why? So they can sit there and play Angry Birds or whatever all day instead of read a text book?

That's absurd! If the school is paying for it, then maybe. But only maybe. Because if anything happens to that fragile piece of tech, the parents are probably the ones who'll wind up replacing it.

That is insanee!!! There so expensive. All these little kids are getting cell phones at young ages and all these electronics. The school shouldn't do that! then if they have the optional thing, then the kids without an iPad are gonna feel left out and could get made fun of becausse there parents arn't rich or what not.

While I agree that children should be taught to use the newest gadgets that are projected to be revolutionary I think 6th grade is a bit too young. We aren't teaching our students the basics in any reliable fashion...honestly? A 6th grader needs a pencil, a piece of paper, and a book. This is coming from a very successful homeschooling Mom!
We supplemented through Discovery Channel, the library, the internet, calculators, ect. But the only thing my kids NEEDED was a writing tool, something to write on, and a lesson plan.
I should mention that my kids are in an online Academy and on the honor roll so ya...I kinda do know what I'm talking about! Teach the basics and the rest will be easy to learn at the appropriate time, like in High School where a Summer job will net the income needed for an iPad.

Okay, my question is what prestigious school does she go to? Any average middle class school wouldn't require that.
As an educator, I can see the purpose of using them, but not to the extent of forcing every 6th grader to purchase one.
