This is definitely not my thing, and it kind of grosses me out to look at it. I appreciate it, but it's not for me.
Menstrual Art
01/21/2011
Depends.
I used to mix menstrual blood, blood from wounds into paint for a certain color and opacity, and a few times for extra personal depth. I don't think anyone realized. It wasn't meant to be a message for all to see.
But I tend to not like a lot of art that is obviously made with blood and menstrual blood. I just don't feel menstruation is a beautiful thing. I have read plenty from those who feel otherwise, a long time ago, I had a more open heart. But I realized I couldn't agree with such sentiments. I feel that menstrual blood is simply a waste product. And I don't think a lot of art I've seen painted with such blood is aesthetically pleasing. That isn't the point of some, but I can't take something meaningful seriously if I don't want to look at it. I appreciate art for skill as well as meaning.
Perhaps I am a hypocrite, but this is how I feel.
I certainly wouldn't want to handle someone else's menstrual painting. Even if it isn't dangerous. I think that is a natural response.

Sure enough it is. Women collect their blood via Diva cup and then actually make paintings out of it.
Now this is a google search link. There are blogs and articles and all kinds of stuff on this.
My question is, have you ever heard of this? would you do this? Do you, like me see this as being some health hazard one would hang on their wall?
Thoughts? less

the long and short of the creation of this for me was, first starting to use the moon cup. pouring my bright clear blood into a white toilet just felt like such a waste. as an artist, that was red, the most perfect red, and i was flushing that perfect paint. i was fascinated by this thing 'my' body did without me asking it to, or having any control over it whatsoever.
nearly a year later i had a rape scare while hitchhiking alone in spain. i tried to brush it off but the thing must have shaken me to the core because.
after a year of travel in europe, i bought a ticket home.
and did not have a period for 3 months. this was the first time my period had ever been irregular like this.
so when i began to menstruate again, i was relieved. if you've ever had a pregnancy scare, you know the sight of that blood is one of the most beautiful things. for me it meant a return to normalcy, that my body had completed its flushing out of the trauma that i'd refused to accept had happened, that had shaken my body to its core. it meant i was healthy again. and that is a beautiful thing.
i painted with my blood and added in bits of leaves or moths or things i found for about 7 months. i eventually let go of it, and this i think was healthy for me too.
it was a completion of that chapter. to let go of the need to save my blood, to be able to see it in my cup, appreciate it for what it is, and move on, meant that i was stable again. i had moved on.

Talk about going GREEN. I mean RED. Talk about your natural hues. I am not going to the link. I can imagine it. I am certain, they feel empowered by it and what makes them happy to do it and connect with nature; I am certain there is a natural flow to their artwork and brush strokes. Enjoy.

Not for me but as my momma always says whatever floats your boat and works for you

Just not for me. Kudos, though.

I have never heard of it before you posted this. I know about Diva Cups b/c I used to sell them at teh health food store I worked at, but I couldn't imagine collecting blood and painting. Just not for me, no way-no how.

human beings have been using blood as medium since we started evolving... so this doesn't surprise me; it just became more mainstream. I'm glad we're being exposed to contemporary art though.

I love art, I definitely do..but man oh man..haha
10/03/2011
Oh my! Holy mother of pearl are you kidding me? I'm not one that is very into art like paintings. I don't know why, but I just was not given the gift of understanding what people see in a piece of canvas with splattered paint everywhere. I have tried and just am not at all good with thinking in depth when I see a painting. Now I'm very creative and am actually a writer and work in acrylic nail design! Lol. But for some reason, I don't "get" paintings.
Anyways, wow! I'm really shocked at learning this, but I do see it as a major health hazard. Like I said, I'm not very understanding when it comes to paintings so this may be why I feel this way, but I do not understand why anyone would want a painting covered in menstrual blood hanging on the wall. ?? I wouldn't do it or want it on my wall. I kind of feel better about blood being properly disposed of. I prefer it being carefully disposed and taken out, not left anywhere in the home so this would not be somethign I could love or even consider art.

I'm so sorry, but EW!?!!!!! Squatting and letting your waste cover a piece of canvas? Oh my! I can't even believe that. That sounds extremely unsanitary and do people buy this stuff?

OK I had more to say and didn't realize it til just now. Lol. So sorry. I'm all for being mature and realizing women DO have periods and it is life. No reason to say YUCK! and run away and panic if a woman even mentions period. This is a time where we need to stop hiding and being immature about things like hearing the word menstrual cycle. I totally get that, but to bleed on a canvas? That is not what I think art is. Also, while I'm so glad the world is kind of realizing that women have periods and while men may not want to know what happens, it's great that it's not kept quiet or made to be ashamed any more, but is bleeding our blood all over canvas really necessary? Be proud and yes, I'm so thankful my partner likes to know about my body and is the first person to run and grab me tampons when they're needed and is not ashamed or grossed out by it, but I really don't think this whole new type of "art" is absolutely necessary and I certainly don't think it's going to benefit women in any way what so ever? Is there a way it could though?
The way I see it is we should not be made to be ashamed of periods, but it's not too different from peeing or pooping on a canvas and calling that art is it? Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the beauty in it. Why not just use paint? The drawing itself might be pretty, but the fact that menstrual blood was used does not make it beautiful to me. I don't find periods nasty or gross or unlcean, but I don't find keeping your blood and selling it totally sanitary either.

MissStormRyder
I have heard of people using blood, urine and feces in art...menstrual blood is a new one for me. Not sure I would buy some of this type of work but I'm sure there is a market for it.
10/03/2011
I an imagine the art if quite beautiful, but as an artist myself I would not do this! I imagine no matter what seal they use that it would eventually stink and the fact it is menstrual blood, or even blood in general, turns me. I'm not good around blood...
03/03/2013
Call me close-minded but I think it's gross.
03/04/2013
Wow, I think that's just gross, but to each his or her own!
03/04/2013
I've heard of it and fair play to the women who do it, but I think it's pretty gross.
