So I was looking at my laptop today and started thinking about the built in webcam and wondered what people generally use them for.

I ordered a new laptop and it will have a built in webcam I hope to use it for video reviews and video chatting!

Have a webcam that is used only for chatting with relatives that live far away.

I use Apple's facetime to talk face to face with my wife. It is especially useful in Canada where I can't use my cell phone. We love it.

I have a laptop with a built in mic and cam. However; I have discovered that they do not work as well as external ones. And since the computer I wanted only had the option of having both.. bought the external ones on top.
Anyone I chat with frequently, if their sound is off or their picture is wonky... I suggest external ones. Otherwise; it is just a waste of time!!!

Having the built in camera on my computer makes it 10x easier for me to do video reviews and do video chats with my partner when he's not here visiting me. It's definitely more convenient and I don't have to worry about adjusting the focus of the position of the camera constantly.

Once in awhile, I use my webcam for chatting, but more often than not, it just doesn't get used.

I never use mine, the novelty has worn off in the last few years.

They're incredibly handy when you need one and aren't in the way when you don't. I used to have a desktop that had an external set up; the camera was always falling or pointing off in some random direction.

I actually haven't used mine for much of anything yet except random videos and pictures. I will, however be using it for my, ahem, webcam modeling career.

I used to use mine for shooting video reviews, but then one day it just started sucking for that. It still seems to work just fine for video calls with my sister, but for self video, the quality seemed to go waaaaay down.

We don't use the internal cam. We have an external cam plugged in because it gives us more control over what the other users see when we're camming. And the mic on my cam is better than the netbook's. Microsoft makes a damn good webcam, I've had it for almost four years and it's never *knock on wood* glitched or interfered with other programs. Not at all a bad buy for $50. We may eventually upgrade to a remote cam. Just have to wait to see how far he wants to let this particular kink ride before making that leap.

I have a built in web cam but I rarely use it.

I don't have a webcam. I don't even have a lap top. I'd love one, but it isn't in the budget right now.
I use our digital camera to do video reviews. It works really well.

Webcams are really cheap though...like $20 or so for a decent one.

I have a desktop but have a webcam that i bought so I can talk to my bf and other friends on Skype.

I have a built in cam but all I've done so far is take a few pics. When the bf is deployed I will probably learn to do more with it. (crossed fingers that's not any time soon.)

I have a builtin cam and I use it for Skype to talk to friends who live in different states, and countries. I also do BlogTV shows and hold an active book review club online

I'm webcamless. I had an awesome, shiny new laptop with a built-in webcam for a whole month before my apartment got broken into. It was great for when I was IMing with a friend and wanted to show them something. (Usually the freakishly cute thing my kittens were doing. Am so going to end up a crazy cat lady.)

I have an external webcam I bought specifically to be able to do video reviews. It cost $35 dollars after a mail in rebate (Payed for itself after two video reviews) I could have gotten an even cheaper one but I payed more for one whose design I really liked.

I have a built-in web cam, but I bought one with a better image for video calls on Skype.

I use it exclusively for e-sex with my long term, long distance boyfriend. :}
...You asked!!!

LOL! SOOOO many times I would go to put in on MSN video chat with my external and the screen would pop up with it looking at the back end of my desk compete with wires and dust bunnies. I would have to fish it out.

I recently got a netbook with cam and mic. Works great for video reviews

I have an external cam and I use it while being naughty as a cam model! Hey! a girl has to make some extra money to buy toys with!!!! LOL

Not to be nosey, but do you make good money doing that? Always thought that cam modeling might be a fun way to help with bills and such.

I got a pretty decent used webcam on amazon for 6 dollars with a few extra dollars for shipping. It doesn't have a built in mic, but using the phone is pretty easy for us.

I have a built-in cam as well as an external (both have mics. I use them for chatting on the messenger programs, taking hands free photos and playing with my online Master.
Jury is still out on whether I'll use one of them or the digital camera for video reviews.

I have an external one but it just collects dust. I don't really have many friends online anymore...and not any that I'd use it with.

The external camera collects dust - thats right. And I do not like the fact that you need pack/unpack it everytime you want to use it. The internal one is much better from this point of view.
However, the quality of an external one is usually better (if you buy a good one), because the built-in cameras are the mid-range or low-end types. And if something gets wrong with the external one, you can always buy a new one...
