I work in an animal ER, we once had a guy who's dog fell off a ledge during a hike, it was a bigger dog amd it had broken limbs and the guy hiked the dog out 3 miles or so on his back to the car to bring it in. I've also had people tell me they ran out in traffic to save a pet in te road, most of them are strays so the people are risking getting hit by a car for an animal they don't even know/own. I would totally risk my life to save my pet, but I might be a bit biased

I'm one of those people that run out in the road to save animals. If it was certian death, no would'nt risk it I think. How ever I have never been in anything dire like a fire. Other then that I consider all situations to be duable for saving a pet. If you take enough precautions it's safe to rescue pets. Example when I go out in the road I jump up and down to get alot of attention so people will stop. I go out before they stop because there are to many assholes that actually like running animals over. -_-
04/14/2012
I personally would. I'd run after it as if it was my flesh and blood. My animals are my babies, they are my children. I couldn't imagine seeing something like that and not doing anything.
Once a women was walking down the street with her dog, and another dog jumped his yard and attacked her dog. She was trying to break them up, but tha dog wasn't letting go of her dog. My first reaction was HELP HER DOG. I ran to help and my boyfriends dad ran after me to stop me. He scremed that dog could kill you, or he could have something. It was the hardest thing I EVER had to watch. The whole block was standing outside and NO ONE would help. The women was standing there fighting this dog because he was killing her dog. She did get bit a few time. She and her dog was covered in blood. For a minute her dog stopped fighting but when he herd his onwner screm and faught back. Someone called the cops and the cops almost had to shoot the dog. They ended up hitting the dog with a night stick and he let loose.
Till this day It kills me. The look on that womens face, the sound of her screams where aweful. And no one wanted to help. If it wasn't for my boyfriends dad, I would have most likely got hurt badly but I was willing to risk it.
Her dong ended up okay, and had to be in the hospital for sometime, and the dog that attacked him was put down. I feel bad that, that had to happen. If his owners would have locked him up. That would have never happen and he would be alive today. Also, alot of us think that dog was being used for animal fighting, because he went stright for the dog. Didn't even pay the human any attention. He wasn't scared of people.
With all that said,
If my dog would be willing to die for me, and taking a beating... Why can't I do that for them?
Sorry for this LONG ass story....

I would try to do whatever I could to save them. I love my pets! They are family too . As a couple others mentioned, I'd help a random animal if I could. I can't stand to see animals hurting. Sad but true, I like animals more than some people!
My fiance and I came up on a doe that had been hit and the jerks just left her there, she was thrashing all around...it was heartbreaking. I cried. He drove down the road to his aunts to get a gun because he was going to go back and put it down, no one was there so we got a knife but by the time we got back to the scene a truck was pulled over and a group of guys were outside. One of them slit her throat and pulled her way off the side of the road into the brush . It broke my heart but I'm glad there are decent people. If I had hit an animal like that and it was still alive I would atleast call the police or someone so they can come out and put it down instead of making it suffer. I hate to even think of that incident.

I agree, I can't seen an animals hurt. I cry like a baby. I can't even go into pets mark because they have live animals that you can adopt. I always find my self over there when we go. And when it's time to leave I'm crying like a spoild baby because I can't have one. My boyfriend has to drag me out of there. I know if I had a bigger house I'd have more animals. I can't watch shows about animal abuse. It hurts my heart. I'd rather hurt a human over an animal....

All animals want is LOVE, and the sad part is, some animals are beaten and then they come to their owners looking for love, like that person wasn't just hurting then.... How can you NOT risk what you have for a lovt that has NO limits. It doesn't matter if it comes from a animal or human.

There are very few things in this world I would put my life in jeopardy for, and a pet is a gray area for me. Not that I wouldn't...I just haven't been in that situation so I can't say for certain.
04/14/2012
I really don't know what I would do in that situation, I've never been there before.

I've only had to protect my dog once and it was probably 12 years ago when he was a puppy. I was walking him in my neighborhood and one of our neighbors was out with her dog as well but was down the street. She had an aggressive mastiff and when it saw my puppy (a small westie) it started running towards him. Since mastiffs are so big she couldn't hold onto the leash so it knocked her over when he tugged on it and she let go of the leash and he ran after my dog. He bit my dog once and then I got down on the ground in sort of a ball with my dog in the middle. The other dog bit my arm and even through my coat and sweatshirt it made me bleed and I ended up having to go to the hospital.
Looking back, I don't think what I did was safe, I'm lucky the dog didn't bite my neck or something or end up killing my dog. I am sure it would have killed my dog if I hadn't gotten in the way. I wouldn't want to put myself in a life threatening situation, but honestly adreniline does crazy things sometimes and I can't say how I would react in a situation until I am in it.

I can't really say. I have children who depend on me. A pet is the least of my worries. While I love them, they can be replaced. If my pet was in danger I don't think I could risk putting myself in danger to save it. However, I might feel different in the situation.

Beck, I have to agree with you. I didn't even think about that. If I had children, I may not be as quick to help an animal, as I would with no children.

I guess we all really don't know what we would do at that moment. Like you said adreniline does crazy things...
I'm glad that in the end you were able to walk away from that. You are a brave person and I bow to you
Did you ever findout what happened to the dog that attacked you?
04/14/2012
Sorry but I have a daughter and husband who need me. No pet could ever make me risk my life for the sake of it. I have much other important things in my life to worry about. Doesn't mean I don't care about the pet or will miss it. It's just not as important as a human being.

We didn't press charges against them and didn't ask him to put their dog down or anything like that. I know my dad talked to the owner about it. I was 13 or so when it happened so I'm sure I didn't hear all the details. They did start walking the dog back in the field instead of in the neighborhood, so we were happy with that and was able to avoid the dog from then on. We moved about a year later so I don't know what happened after that. Hopefully he did not bite anyone else!

I am still afraid of big dogs though. My little westie is fine though, he still loves to play with the big dogs when we go to the dog park.

Here in minnesota if your dog attacks another dog or human. You lose your rights. You then have no say in if your dog is killed or given back with just a fine.
They just take your animal. It doesn't matter if it is the first time it happened and the dog got loose by mistake. DOESN'T MATTER!
If the cops pull up and your dog is hurting a person, or animal that is on a leash. They have the right to walk up and shoot the attacking dog right on the spot, and then YOUR given a fine, and you have to clean up the mess.
Animal laws here are BAD!!!

I would. I love my pets and if I would definitely risk my life to save them. I used to raise ducks and I always thought about things like "what if me and my dog are walking to the duck pen and see a bear" I'd totally throw myself in front of my dog to try to scare it off or something before she could go after it and die.
04/14/2012
I would definitely risk getting injured, but I don't know about life-threatening circumstances. I guess I'd have to do that split second decision thing where you weigh the possibility of succceeding vs. the odds of getting out alive.
04/14/2012
I might do something stupid before I relize that it is life threating, but if I knew I would die, I wouldn't, I would say good-by.
04/14/2012
I said it would depend, however I am also one of those people who run into traffic to save a strange animal. I would probably do this, but ouch, it is going to hurt!!
04/14/2012
I would rather be around to be with my girlfriend then to die for my pet and leave her here alone. sorry Mittens, i love my GF more.
04/14/2012
I have kids that need me, so if it meant my life I would have to say no.

But wouldn't that risk both of you dying? You would rather both of you died then your animal die and you survive? Curious question, please don't think I'm being confrontational.

I love animals but I would never risk my LIFE for one. I have children to worry about and raise, they need their mother. I would try and save a pet but if it meant my life or my pets, the answer is no. :/

A dog would have better chance at surviving against a bear then a human. So you'd be better off getting the heck out of dodge..or playing dead. Whatever it is they do when bears come around.

Bye-bye fido.
I love my pets, don't get me wrong. But I have 3 kids and another on the way. My human babies are way more important than my fur babies... No way would I risk my life for a pet...
