If you were offered a job in a different country, would you go?

Contributor: Mwar Mwar
Let say that you were offered your same job (or a promotion of it, etc.) but in a different country. The company would pay for traveling fees and assist you in finding somewhere to live.

You need to decide quickly, because if you say yes, you're leaving quickly! Woud you go?

To keep things simple, assume the job is one you'd be content with for the long haul and the country is not one you dislike, but not necessarily one you love. (so different, but no extreme visceral reaction on either end).

In a heart beat!!!

I wouldn't even think of it!!! I'd start counting down the days, think of what shots are needed, then worry about the visa for that country, then worry I've not enough pages in my passport... all the while packing in my head thinking of what would be the best way to send the majority of my things to my future home, then think screw it. I don't need most of it, get rid of it, need to get rid of the old stuff I've been holding onto and then just get all excited and wonder what would my new home be like???

And all that would be running through my head at the same time.

Some of the biggest things to look for are the salary. Many companies will offer you the same salary but if you are in the States then move to England (as an example), your salary... well it doesn't covert all that well, so make sure that it is converted into the local salary with the standard of living you are comfortable with.

But if you move to a developing country, keep your American salary and ask for a distance bonus.

But above all else, negotiate a new contract to make sure you can have time off (and a good amount of time too) to return home to visit. You don't have to take it, but have it there, and they should be footing the bill for the travel.

Is this you in this question? I love to move to new cultures and learn about them!!! Can you tell?

It depends on where.

It depends where it is; I would really rather live in a developed country. I would definitely have a really difficult time leaving my family and friends.

It'd be a hard choice, but I think I would go. Right now, nothing better is coming up, my boyfriend would love it, and we're young and don't have ties other than family in the US. We don't have kids right now, or amazing jobs, or even a house yet.

Most likely I would go -- especially if the job were in Europe.

I would most likely go. However; that would depend on the country. If it's somewhere that it isn't all that safe to go or it isn't safe to go outside of the city; then hell no.

What a cool opportunity to enjoy another culture and still get paid doing it...with a promotion, no less? YES, would so do this. I get to travel worldwide now, with my job...SOMETIMES, and it is amazing, but a week here and there, is still just "tasting" not "living" the lifestyle.

You might want to actually spell out what country you are being offered a position in, and perhaps someone here on EF knows some tips about that place that could help you decide or have a better time when there. This is a GREAT resource of people.

I'd love to go, the only thing that might discourage me is if there was a language barrier.

I had some college friends who, like me, had only a relatively useless English degree who went overseas to teach. Though I was tempted by that option to see another country, gain experience and get paid, I don't want to be alone overseas for 2 years.

I voted yes, but it would depend on the country. I would not move to a country where it was dangerous. But as long as it was safe and the necessary resourses were included I would!

I voted not to go.

Heck, I'm in a different country now and I haven't looked back.
After awhile, you get use to the language and the locals but it's
an experience you'll never forget.
