I had an argument with a friend about this today. I have always pronounced it "PE-can" rather than "pe-CAHN", but he argued that a "pee can" is something you take on long truck drives. Ew! How do you all pronounce it?
How do you pronounce "pecan"?

No pee can here, but usually I'll say it like "pi-cahn".

Pi-cahn here!

Pi-chan. Pee-can was common in the south where I grew up though.

I say Pi-cahn. It really depends on where you're from.

Pi-cahn, usually. Though I'm sure I've said both depending on context.

My mom (raised in Wisconsin) pronounces it PE-can so I did too. However, since moving to TX several years ago I now pronounce it pi-cahn.

Interesting poll. I think it varies by region
12/13/2011
PEcan!

I love Pecan Pie. When I'm excited I say: PE-con Pie. But I know it's more likely pe-CHAN! Does the part of the country where you live have anything to do with the pronunciation?

I do it the second way.
12/13/2011
I dont know...
12/13/2011
Pee-Con
12/13/2011
pee cahn. lol.

Now that I think about it, I say pe-CAHN usually but sometimes call the pie PE-can. Must have learned the usage in differing contexts. I also pronounce Caribbean differently when referring to the Sea and the Disneyland ride.

Jersey will do that to you lol

PEE-cahn here
12/13/2011
PE-can, notice which one is still spelled correct.
12/13/2011
I can't pick one or the other, because I don't always pronounce it the same way. Sometimes I say "pee-can", other times, I say "pi-khan". I do the same with caramel. Sometimes it's "care-a-mel", other times it's "car-mel".
12/13/2011
I say PE-can, and so does everyone I know. I've never actually heard anyone say pe-CAHN in person, just on TV.
12/13/2011
pe-CAHN or, those things that make my mouth go numb.
12/13/2011
I actually say it both ways, and pe-con as well.
