How do you prefer your fruit?

Contributor: Wicked Wahine Wicked Wahine
I grew up eating most fruit cold & never thought about it because that's the way it was presented to me. Then I got sensitive teeth; that's when I started leaving the fruit out to warm up before eating it. Sure, I'd picked fruit outside, such as berries, & eaten them warm & they were delicious. But I hadn't tried always eating it at room temp.I have discovered that it just tastes so much better when it's not cold! This made sense once I thought about it; the colder a food the harder it is for your taste buds to sense the flavor. This is why ice cream seems so sickeningly sweet when it's melted. It's also why we often prefer a meal to be hot, it just tastes better. This must explain why I dislike hot meat, I don't like the taste of it to begin with, (except bacon), but when cold, its more palatable to me. Enough about my idiosyncrasies, lets focus on just the fruit...

Do you prefer to eat your fruit at room temperature or cold?

Off the top of my head, I think that I usually eat & prefer all fruit to be cold.

As far as the hot & cold of foods - I don't mind most foods hot, but I almost never heat up anything that has already been cooked. If I am eating a can of soup (that is not a part of a family meal), I just pop the lid off and go.

As for your comparison of taste buds being able to taste hot better, the only thing like this that ever really jumped out at me was coffee. I don't mind cold coffee at all. But I have noticed that good coffee tastes good when it's cold, but bad coffee tastes way worse when it's cold.

I find your experience with the good versus bad coffee very interesting. I can easily believe it, I just haven't experienced it because I don't drink coffee.

For me it depends on how I am having the fruit. I suppose an example might be an apple. If I am simply wanting an apple, I prefer it fresh, cold and crisp. Each bite should crunch. If I have that same apple with sliced cheese, I'm going to prefer that it be served closer to room temp. If I used an example like fresh Bing cherries, I like them somewhat chilled and whole. That same cherry, I might pit and cook down with brandy until its a sauce for a dessert topping, or maybe a meat glaze. So, I could go on and on with the various ways I might serve fruit.

I prefer most fruit at room temp because, as you said, I can taste it more that way. Good fruit will taste even better at room temp!

Growing up my mom always kept all our fruit in the fridge (except bananas). But as an adult, I keep all mine out in bowls on the counter. I much prefer it that way!

I like my fruit cool. Not quite cold and not quite room temperature. It hurts my teeth when it's too cold!

Sorry, I should have specified that I meant just when eating it plain, by itself. So that would be the apple, but not the apple with cheese, and not cooking the fruit, either. Although, all of what you said is true, it's just beyond the scope of my intended question.

It depends on what it is. I always eat bananas room temperature. I like apples both ways. Almost everything else is better cold to me, especially oranges.

I'm pretty used to eating fruit cold since it lasts longer in the fridge, but it does taste and smell pretty fantastic warm.

Okay, I feel like I'm back in class and I didn't pay attention to the assignment. All I needed to do was read your question as follows, "Do you prefer to eat your fruit at room temperature or cold?"

I like most fresh fruit slightly chilled, but not too cold. The exception to my rule would be if I was picking the fruit directly off the tree or vine.

Mostly at room temperature, but I like some things cold: melons, grapes, grapefruit... I can't think of any more at the moment.

I prefer room temperature fruits as apposed to refrigerated, but I'm not overly picky. I do find that some fruits taste better cold. Like some apples.
