How did you meet your significant other?

Contributor: Jul!a Jul!a
Match.com keeps playing these commercials that say that about 1 in 5 relationships start by meeting online. I know I'm not that old, but I remember when this was really frowned upon and I just found it interesting to see how 'ok' it had become now.

My fiance and I met in high school, were each other's first long term relationship, and even tho we broke up for a while, we still maintained a strong emotional connection. I still say we're high school sweethearts.

Where/how did you meet yours?

I was one of those 'firsts who met online' back in 1999. Ours ended in marriage for nine years and two months, and now I'm seeking divorce.

The net is a great tool for meeting people, but it's only a tool like those contact magazines and dating services of the 70s and 80s - you have to meet them in person. That was my problem when my ex-husband and I got together since he proposed to me while we were still chatting and I never got to know what he was REALLY like that year+ we were 'dating', even when we finally met in person.

I spent nine years in an emotionally abusive celibate marriage with a man who was more insecure than myself. When I finally sought therapy and began to realize what I was in, I got out; the papers will be signed next month.

Yes, the net is great for finding, just do the meeting very quickly before you invest yourself so far in the only thing you can do is stay (and die).

I met my husband in a very interesting way...My mother cheated on my father with his father. We became great friends in elemtary school and remained so even after my mother cheated on his father with someone else. We started dating in highschool and have been together ever since.

Kind of a messed up way to meet someone but most people can see the humor in it

Online, but not an online dating site. A discussion site about a computer game. Yes, we're geeks .

I agree with Chilipepper Girl: online is a great way to meet people, but make sure you know someone irl for a while before committing to them.

We were housemates. There's nothing like living with someone before you date them.

Strangely, my sister met her husband as a housemate three weeks before I met mine.

Honest-to-God, we met on MySpace. He was in a nearby town, and we decided to meet up after a couple weeks of IM. We're still dating now.

We met back in 1989. She was my best friends, girl friends friend.(did that come out right) We got together at a party, she was complaining about a kink in her neck and I offered to massage it out. That was the best massage I ever gave.
We lived together for ten years before we were married.

ICQ. I was new in town, I did a search for local people online. He and one other guy were on. He responded to my IM and the other guy didn't. I accidentally spilled chocolate milk on my keyboard so we exchanged numbers. We stayed on the phone all night long for a few nights. One night he was trying to mix hot chocolate in milk for something to drink so I brought him a pitcher of sweet tea at 2 am.

9 years later we're still together and we've been married over eight of those years.

We went to highschool together and became friends while we were each in a relationship and bonded over neither of us having a "normal" family. My mother is a lesbian and most of my family are close friends in the gay and lesbian community. His mother has blue and purple hair and covered in tatoos. So as you can imagine high school got fun for us. Well we bacame close eventually started to date he left for basic training I told him I wouldn't wait, and then we got married! lol 2.5 years and were still going strong.

My boyfriend is my body piercer (and his dad is my tattooist), so we met at his dad's shop. I remember I'd always get butterflies in my stomach whenever I'd head down to the shop because I thought he was the sexiest man on the planet and he had such an awesome personality. I secretly wished that he'd ask me out but I never in a million years thought he would because I just didn't think I was the type of girl he'd go for. But several months, two tattoos, and three piercings later, he gave me his number and we went to dinner and a movie that weekend.

We've only been together for six months, but I've never been happier. :-]

I was naked, covered in green paint and making impressions of my body on giant rolls of newsprint on the quad at my university as a freshman. I ran into him and I thought he seemed nice enough, so I told him to watch for cops/creepers while I made my prints. It was two years before we encountered each other again, and we became close friends before we ever dated. But here I am, graduating with my BA and we're together for more than a year Fun stuff.

I met mine because we worked in the same building. He came to the office I worked in to borrow our dolly and after that I would wave at him whenever I saw him in the halls or outside. After that, everything is history!

I also met my SO in college. We met at an after party for the school's annual Haines Hall Underwear Ball. Needless to say, it was not the most modest party I've ever been to. Anyway, I gave him a back rub, and when the party broke up he offered to return the favor at my place. He actually did give me a great back rub! But, basically it was a one night stand that turned into a six year (so far) relationship.

Recently we decided to explore an open relationship, and we've both met people online. I met my other bf on OK Cupid, but we only talked online for about a week before we met up in person.

Yeah, we met at MiCon (Gaming convention at CMU). I was a Cammie. She was a newbie.

It took a few weeks for us to be open around ourselves. Long story really.

But yeah, we met over Vampire: The Requiem LARP

At work, but we'd been floating around the same circles for a while previous. It's a long story but a nice one.

I worked at a pizza place my senior year in high school and he worked at the UPS store next door. My best friend also worked at the UPS store. I always used to hear about this guy who worked next door, but we had opposite schedules so we never met. Eventually the employees from my pizza place and the UPS store started getting together to go to the movies on Thursday nights. On the first movie night he sat next to me, and no sooner had we met he started flirtatiously teasing me. I decided I was going to move and sit a few rows down and he decided he was going to pick up a skittle and throw it at my head. Needless to say, I walked back to my seat next to him, and gave him a piece of my mind. After that we really hit it off and ended up talking and joking for the rest of the movie. It was like I had known him for years, we just clicked. We've been dating for about three and a half years since

My aunt and uncle met because my grandmother thought that the boy at the pizza parlor was really nice and my aunt needed to go meet him, so my grandma would always order pizzas from there and ask that he deliver them, or send my aunt to go get them. They were married for about 30 years before he passed away, but your story reminded me of the story of them.

Alan and I met through my mom originally, but I was too young to be interested and moved out of state shortly afterwards. Many years and relationships later I moved back to our hometown, rented an apartment, and was really surprised to find out that Alan was renting the unit behind mine. I still wasn't sure that I was interested at first, but he worked hard to convince me that I was.
Strange how these things happen.

Sigel and I met in highschool, we broke up officially for two whole weeks before we moved in together and the rest was history.
Arch and I met in an online game called Lineage and played lin2 and wow for three years before we discussed anything farther, Sigel and I dated for a year before doing anything sexual. It's just the way I do things, I won't get intimate until I know you so for me internet "dating" is a bit of a mystery. It's a great vehicle for bringing people together but it's like meeting in a bar to me, risky and yet many people find it exciting.
