Never heard of it and I think it's quite ridiculous that the doctors came up with that idea. Aren't there enough pills in the world that would take care of that? Or how about eat healthier/cleaner.

To the person who voted they did have one. Could you please tell us about it? I'd really love to hear your story.

I watched that episode and I honestly can't imagine having something like that inside me. I don't think I'd ever feel clean again.

I think people don't understand the kind of patient that needs this fairly "radical" procedure.

Some forms of diarrhea and other GI depleting conditions, caused by disease, loss of the intestinal lining, surgical or illness causes loss of actual parts of the intestines, severe cases of needing heavy doses of certain antibiotics and/or chemotherapy can deplete the GI system of beneficial bacteria.

IF something simple like oral or even rectal probiotics could help these patients, they would be used. These patients immune systems are beyond the use of health food store probiotics. As for "eating healthy" these patients may not be able to eat at all, they are so ill, so that isn't an option.

This isn't an elective procedure. It is for very sick people, whose GI system is unable to re-colonize itself. This procedure may be there only hope at living.

It isn't used for fun, or for any other reason than absolute medical necessity. Chances are, if you needed this procedure (and the chances are you won't) you'll be too sick to even refuse, assuming you want to live.

Honestly, I saw this on MANswers a while ago...it's really gross but if it was a fecal transplant or death situation I'd consider it...actually, I'd probably do it. I'm not in the mood to die any time soon after all.
x_x

As far as I'm aware no one I know (myself included) have had to have one thankfully.

I'll just take a probiotic when I need some help - thank you!

Just because a doctor can do something and it works, does not mean it is something I would do no matter what a doctor said.

same here !

It sounds gross- but I mean, if it makes you better in the end? Then I can't understand what all the fuss is about.

I've heard of it. Doctors are working on removing the "ick" factor by separating out the helpful organisms from everything else. Then it will be "clean" transplant of just organisms.
