What freaks you out most, if you find it in your kitchen when you turn on the lights in the morning?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
The last five mornings, upon turning on my kitchen light at five AM, I have been greeted by a single, BIG red ant running around the floor and a single BIG spider on the wall. Sorry gentle souls, but I dispatched them to their heavenly reward with my shoe, each time. The next morning...same two types of bugs. It is SO darn odd. A trail of ants can be found. A single ant...what does one do?

So...what freaks YOU out if you waked up and find an uninvited guest in your kitchen? Feel welcome to offer suggestions to help me or others, if they do.

P.S. Ant traps are NOT an option (on the floor), since I have a dog.
Thanks.

Although an unfamiliar person would be the absolute most frightening thing, of the things I have experienced, we have cockroaches most often and they can be a decent scare. The other thing we get occasionally is a scorpion and that can be pretty scary.

Cockroaches give me the creeps. I'm not scared of them, I'm just disgusted by them. They made me shudder with sickness when I see them scurrying along the floor. I can't crush them, or it makes me want to throw up.

There are small ones and big ones, and I hate them all. I've had them fall on me before, and just typing this is making my stomach churn and giving me the shudders.

I've tried to throw shoes on them, but normally I just scream at my dad and partner to get it. One time, I even told a six year old boy to kill it for me. In that home, there are no pets, so sprays and traps are fine.

About your ant problem- I have two cats, and we have ants in the kitchen. I got a spray, moved the cats over into the bedroom and removed open food and animal food out of the area, blocked off the kitchen, and sprayed all the small holes and area I saw them coming from. We also sprayed along the trails outside around the door and under the windows Hope this helps!

Spiders and roaches scare me the most to randomly find in the kitchen at ANY time. We get roaches the most, though. Our house is kind of in the middle of a long and drawn out remodel (only remodeling when we have the money...) so we have bugs of all kinds in this house.

But really, other than those two, finding another person that doesn't live in my house would freak me out, too.

If other is truly an open ended question I'm going to have to go with recently deceased corpse. Or recently deceased corpse turned zombie...that would be worse.

A mouse, which I did recently find (and which was trapped in the next 48 hours). They're cute and fuzzy and freak me out when they're loose in my house.

I'm fine with minute animals, BUT it would have to be like some out of the ordinary shit. A weird big animal, a stranger...

There is this stuff called Terro. It's nothing more than boric acid in a syrup base. You put it on little pieces of cardboard about the size of a quarter or a dime and the ants bring it home to the nest and it kills the queen and that's it. I put it on cardboard on the counter tops. It takes 2 to 3 days to kill all the ants.

A dog would have to eat a couple of bottles of it for it to harm him, so it's pretty safe. One of my babies actually came crawling into the room once with a boric acid trap IN her mouth. I called Poison Control and they said it wouldn't hurt her. Boric acid is the stuff you use to wash clothes with, it's not all that toxic to people, but it works well for ants.

We use Terro several times during the summer.

For the spiders, I spray them with cheap hairspray, it freezes them, and then they die. I HATE spiders with a passion. Hairspray also works when a wasp or bee is flying around your house. It freezes their wings, so you can mash 'um when they fall to the floor. BLGUGHGHGHHGGH I hate bugs.

I don't want any creatures in my home. I'm just kind of a nut when it comes to that kind of stuff. I grew up with field mice coming in for the winter and I loathed it!!

Ewww, definitely cockroaches or spiders. Ants are small enough that I don't get freaked, but spiders....I am always afraid of getting bitten. I've had mice before, and they are kind of cute...

I think I'd rather have corpses show up in my kitchen than the Arnold Schwartziroaches that find their way into my house.

I don't mind the spiders, I am kind of this weird spider loving freak.

I get super shocked by any type of mess that was not picked up from the night before. Sometimes am too tired to do anything and I will go to bed. But my guy will stay up and leave everything out, food, dishes, you name it. So I wake up to a shitload of a mess and I have to clean it up. I don't know if my guy realizes how much of a mess our flat would be in if I didn't always pick up after him.

I don't have roaches (thank goodness!), so spiders would have to be my pick. If I did have roaches, they would get my vote. Nasty things!

Where do you get Terro at? Any major store carry it? Sounds like something good I can try at my house. Three dogs and LOTS of bugs.

Yes, Terro is the best ant bait there is. I've had a nest somewhere between the walls near the garage, and those pesky little things kept crawling all over my foyer and drove me nuts. I laid one package at a corner, where they were crawling out under the carpet, and the stupid ants totally disappeared a week later. The good thing is, my dog doesn't even bother to sniff it. I also like to scatter dry Borax powder outdoors underneath the wood decks, to keep other ants from building nests down there.

Aside from that one incident of invading ants, there's always a spider here and there, especially when it's hot outside. I'm going to try your Hairspray method, next time when I see those annoying spiders around. Thank you for your wonderful suggestion!

Most hardware stores, like Ace and Menards carry it. I think our grocery store carried it. It comes in an Orange box.

Just put the little cardboard squares that you pour the drops of Terro on away from the dogs. I put them on counters, (they can be near food, it's OK) or in places where the dogs won't just eat them. The stuff shouldn't hurt the dogs, but if your dogs did eat one, you know you'd freak out. I would.

i've found a roach or 2 in my kitchen at my apartment, but the one that startled me the most was the mouse that scurried into one of the eyes on the stove when i turned on the lights once. of course, one of my room mates & i went straight to the store & bought a mouse trap w/ poisoned bait while my other room mate went into the kitchen & turned on the eye it ran into & the oven. i went straight to the office the next day & reported it.

i don't mind most things, except unfamiliar people, roaches, and rats. I like mice and I don't mind ants, though at that point, I would have called an exterminator

I am a major cockroach-phobic. Fortunately, since moving to Texas, I am more likely to find scorpions than cockroaches. I found a scorpion just this morning in fact. I use a special set of tongs to pick them up and put them in a glass jar where they dehydrate and asphyxiate. Yes, I keep a jar of dried scorpions on my kitchen counter. I suppose that's a little weird.
