Do you volunteer?

Contributor: liilii080 liilii080
I moved to my current state about 7 months ago and am still looking into ways to get involved in the community and meet new people. I am looking into volunteering and am looking into different options and opportunities. Maybe you guys can give me some ideas I've never even thought of. Do you volunteer and if so, where? I don't, but want to. Just hard to find time with kids and all. I know when they start School I'll be involved.

I have the same problem as Ashley. And I'd like to get the kids more involved in volunteering once they are a bit older.

I haven't found the perfect opportunity yet. Not having health insurance puts a damper on working with children and animals and those are the two I lean toward the most.

I volunteer with the school system, Volunteer with foster programs, Volunteer to care for injured wildlife, Volunteer for clean up groups at local parks, Volunteer to the Red Cross and did Adopt a Family for Eden at Christmas.

There are others not listed like the Pregnancy Center and Save the Children but yeah the rest come and go not like the main ones.

I keep myself very busy but the majority of it I do from my own home.

I currently volunteer with the Big Sisters organization doing the In-School Mentoring Program. I used to also volunteer with a local daycare, helping out in the toddler room but sadly that had to be cut from my schedule coz I have way too many things on the go

I help out with my sons Pre-school. He doesn't start until next year, but we've been actively involved with helping plan fundraising activities and things for the kids to do for the past year! We also help keep a brand new neighborhood park clean.

I've filled out a couple of applications for animal shelters but I haven't heard back yet so I thought I would look into other opportunities. It seems a lot of people volunteer in their kids schools. I think I'll look in to a local food pantry next.

I never thought about the museums. There are a ton of them where I live. That is a great idea.

My boyfriend was looking into the Big Brothers program they have here, but he's still undecided. We weren't able to find too much information on it without making an appointment and he hasn't done that yet because he's worried about having to say no if it's not something he's up for or not something that will fit with his schedule.

Currently I'm not volunteering because my life has been crazy lately. In the past I have volunteered with mentally challenged adults and with animals. I intend to do both again.

Kudos to you for wanting to get involved! We all have the ability to improve the world we share, but so few of us actually do it! It's difficult to find time to help but it's so worth it. I would encourage you to find something you care about doing, as you'll be more inclined to make time for it. As an EF member I obviously care about sex, so I'm involved on my college campus teaching sexual health and rape prevention to undergrads.

Also, know your limits. It's easy when you see a need and have the volunteer spirit to commit to too much and overwhelm your schedule and psyche. It's important to disclose your concerns to your fellow volunteers. You guys can draw strength from struggling together and keep eachother motivated. Also don't be afraid to take time off to care of yourself if you need to. Life happens, and you don't always have to be a tough guy.

I'm taking a break from volunteering while I find a job and try to finish up school, but I had been a volunteer fireman/mrt and I volunteered at a wildlife rehabilitation center.

All good points to keep in mind. I have a hard time saying no so I'll definitely be careful not to take on too much too early.
