Do you take anything from motels/hotels? (private poll)

Contributor: Peggi Peggi
Most people, when they travel long distances or just feel like stopping or staying somewhere, stay at a motel or a hotel! I have a lot of friends who work in places like this, and say it is incredibly common for people to take things from the rooms when they leave. Some places (the more expensive ones) will put trackers in things like robes and towels, but most do not because they do assume that people will take things.

What do you typically take home with you when you leave?

Sometimes I'll take the soap since it's so small and such a novelty, like a little souvenir!

Recently I have been taking the soap, shampoo, and conditioner so that I can add them to packages to send overseas to the troops.

If the coffee is good, I'll definitely take it. Sometimes I take the shampoo/conditioner/so ap too.

I don't take anything, or even open anything---I've got a bunch of lame fragrance allergies so I always use my own soap.

Soap and shampoo that I use. If I don't use it, I don't take it.

Soap, though my parents will sometimes take shampoo or coffee. They have fifteen-year-old shampoo from the Hotel del Coronado under their sink, for example.

This. Plus a glycerin allergy means anything they have, I don't want.

The hotels always throw out the shampoo or soap once someone has used the room (they don't know if someone has or has not opened them), and I always take it, and we make boxes that are sent to our troops overseas. Long ago, I learned that certain organizations collect these little size toiletries to send to the troops and they really enjoy them!

I travel...a LOT. Never found "good" coffee in a hotel room...even the most upscale of hotels. Where are YOU staying???

Yahoooo...I'm NOT the only one who does this here. It is really a NICE thing to do. Our troops deserve SO MUCH more...but little things like that sure help a BIT.

Funny. The hotels really expect it.

That's wonderful to hear! I've done this for a good while now, sending care packages over, including things that I get from the motels/hotels! They all appreciate it so much more than any of us realize back home, and having something like that can be a luxury over there at times!

I use to take soap and shampoo because our church put together kits that they hand out to the homeless. They don't do that anymore - so i don't take anything.

If I'm halfway through a shampoo or conditioner, I take that with me. I don't take anything else though.

This is sooo weird! We go to Panama every year and just went less than 2 weeks ago and I ALWAYS take everything you can that won't get charged to your bill.

On our trip 2 weeks ago here's what I took from our room and the one next door where my parents stayed:

-dish detergent
-Toilet paper (which came in handy today when I went to the bathroom to find no TP then smiled when I remembered the stash I took from the motel was under my sink! Hee hee.
-The tissue boxes
-all the soaps and conditioners
-coffee and all condiments i.e. creamer, sweet n low, etc.
- the tampons and anything else that won't get charged on the bill.

My family makes jokes ALL THE TIME about my little habits. Lol. Our forks at home have been disappearing for months and we were down to 2 forks! When we go out to eat... I take the forks ! (SHH!) Guess how many forks we have now? 9! Whoo-hoo!

I used to work at a hotel so I know all the things left are thrown away even the unopened soaps, dish detergents and even rolls of TP if they've been used ANY! I ain't about to let something go to waste. Lol. When I worked as a housekeeper though, I learned how many workers and guests would steal towels and now if you steal anything like the towels or dishes or sheets it'll be charged to your credit card and they can even send you a hefty bill after you've arrived back home! Some of my co-workers (not me! I was actually innocent on this one) would park their cars around the back of the motel and when we'd finish our rounds we'd be at the top floors and they'd take the towels and toss them over the rails then pack them in their cars! Lol.

Also, last year when we took our Panama trip always stay in the same hotel, they would leave Pond's facial pads in small packs in our rooms and my partner and I got to talking with our housekeeper about my being a housekeeper too and she ended up giving us a bag full of the facial packs and it lasted my mom and me an entire year! Lol. Very worth it and I loved those things! Ha Ha.

I don't use any of the toiletries hotels/motels provide, I always bring my own stuff, and I never take anything from those establishments.

I've worked in a few hotels & resorts (front desk/concierge) so I've seen almost everything! Most places throw away the soaps & shampoos whether you use them or not, so might as well take them if you like em! I don't usually take the coffee packets, but if there are tea bags, those might make it into my suitcase. I've also swiped a few room service menus as souvenirs from nicer places. I can't imagine taking towels/washcloths or pillows, though, imagine how many strangers' bodies have been on those!!

Just the little soaps, shampoos and lotions. I like to use them for one night getaways.

Just the shampoo, conditioner and mouthwash. I hear a lot of hotels are interested in using RFID chips on textiles so they won't go missing and if they do, they can charge you for it.

I use the soaps, shampoos, coffee, etc. while I am staying there, but I don't take them with me. Not really worth taking in my opinion.

We may take the soap, conditioner and shampoo, but nothing else. Even then, I never use them at home, so my next trip to a hotel we will be leaving only with what we came with.

I NEVER take towels or robes or anything like that. It's stealing.

Can you imagine stealing a Bible? Sometimes we'll look things up and read Revelations to scare the shit out of each other, but I'd never take one.
