My hubby does this. It drives me nuts. I don't want it splashing me. I can't stand the smell. It just grosses me out. But we have city water too. When I lived with my parents growing up, we had a well. We had to let it mellow if we peed. I think it is just gross.
Do you "let it mellow"?

There have been some instances that I will "let it mellow" just because our pipe system SUCKS in our apartment. If its during the week and no one is home (my kids visit on the weekends and hubby works most the day) then I will let it chill out. Otherwise, if theres guests or the kids and everyone is home, Ill flush

Other.
I DO think it's gross not to.....BUT where the bathroom is located I tend to let it mellow for late night potty runs because it's right next to the kids room and flushing tends to wake them.

I definitely flush every time. I've never really thought about doing otherwise.

I have to flush every time. The smell of pee is very unpleasant.

I have to agree with P'Gell. I hate the smell of urine and notice it right off. Also living in Arizona in the summer the heat makes it impossible to let things hang out. We keep out AC turned way down when we are not home so the house is about 80 degrees and stuff begins to grow in the toilet pretty fast if you leave the urine. Made that mistake once

The smell of urine bothers me a bit (working in health care sometimes desensitizes you to things, and other times sensitizes you to things. I'm sensitized to the smell of stale urine and don't like my house to smell like it.)
I flush every time. We have a private well for our water system and live in an area with plenty of fresh water, so I am not concerned about it. Plus our pee and poo go into a septic system, where they break down and are pumped out once a year or so (in a much reduced form) by a septic company we hire to do this job. They usually incinerate the contents and... I don't know what they do with the ashes. less

I understand why people will do this but I always flush.

Definitely always flush. I live alone so it wouldn't bother anyone but still... But I do have a dual flush toilet which does save some water.

Oh yes! I have looked into it and solar seems the best option for us as the wind can be iffy. We plan at some point to be off the grid, just need the money to invest first. Great part is that the materials are getting cheaper all the time so I hope we can do it soon. $160 a month for elec is pretty rough.

Ya know, I didn't think about the electricity costs. (We have a well and septic, too.) I have an extremely sensitive sense of smell and if someone "lets it mellow" I can smell the urine even after the toilet has been flushed and then have to bring out poisonous chemicals to clean the toilet, inside and out. I really can't stand the smell of urine.
However, we have a wind turbine that The Man is going to eventually hook up to the well pump so we can run it for free! At the moment, he's cutting the acre with our riding mower whose battery was charged by the wind. Yay renewable energy! Have you guys thought about wind power or solar power yet? It's a great investment and you get a tax break on your equipment cost the first year. less

i flush almost ever time

i flush all the time

The only time I don't flush is at night; I don't want the disturbance of the noise, and it doesn't do any harm waiting until morning to flush it.

At my home, we don't flush only urine.

I'm apathetic. I'd rather a composting toilet, but my husband nixed that idea His whole family lets it mellow, which I'd be okay with if not for the fact that it makes the toilet much grosser to clean

I guess this practice is heavily dependent on your diet! I had a brief period of green urine because I was taking too much B12 and I was embarrassed to let it mellow then! I stuck to peeing in the sink until the issue was resolved.

well, unless you have a 20 year plus old toilet you are only flushing 3/4 of a gallon or so of water with each flush. Also the flushing action washes down the sides of the toilet, keeping bacteria at bay and the smell of urine away. just a thought!

I ALWAYS flush, it's gross not to. I said always, but I have my own bathroom and I stay awake night hours working or doing school work so I'm back and fourth for pees and sometimes instead of flushing 10 times, I'll leave the pee. I HAD to last night after peeing ALL day long and having to pee over and over all night, it felt like I was flushing every mins so I waited until a few pees then flushed. Lol. If you're against flushing, I suppose you could always squat in the shower, let it run down the drain. Hee .HEE! When we were kids, our best friend was over a lot and we girls shared a bathroom so when we would stay up drinking all night, we'd all need the toilet at once so my friend squatted in the tub! Ha Ha
