I live in a house with five other people so there are a lot of different views on toilet flushing etiquette. I'm curious to know what the norm is. After you urinate, do you flush?
Do you "let it mellow"?

Eh. It depends. If I know we're going to be tossing back a couple of cold ones, I let it mellow. If it's just our everyday run of the mill pees, I flush it. I have low-flow toilets. And a toilet bowl that gets scuzzy super easy.

It really depends, I live with just one other person and he hates that. But when alone I will sometimes. Majority of the time it's when I've gotten up in the middle of the night, and I go again when I wake up in the morning.

Oh man, flushing a toilet in the middle of the night is a guaranteed way for me to end up with insomnia. It wakes me right up!

The only time I let it mellow was because I had my first baby and I thought flushing the toilet would wake her up. lol. sounds dumb I know, but hey young mom, I didnt want to wake her up.

We have a two use rule in our house, unless there are solids we wait until the second use to flush. One, we have a septic system, and two we use well water. Almost every time we turn on any water source it cost us electricity to run the well pump. So not only do we save water but also electricity too.
Also, me and my son go out side when we can. Our back yard is a forest so there is no worries there. Plus, it can help to keep the bears out of the yard too.

It varies. Generally I don't flush if it's only a small amount, or if it's in the middle of the night. However, I usually will flush after the third go regardless of circumstances, more to keep the paper from piling up than anything else.

I understand the concept but I'm so used to flushing that I do it on instinct.

I always flush. Not flushing is gross and does not do much to save water. Sorry, but its true.

I let the yellow mellow only at my place. If I'm somewhere else, I flush it.

Always flush here. With city water, I'm not sure it would make much of a difference anyway.

My cats drink out of the toilet so I definitely always flush...wouldn't want them not knowing (since one is blind and couldn't see the toilet paper) and accidentally drinking urine.

What is much? It saves as many gallons as are necessary to flush your toilet. One person going 10 times in a day will use at least 30 gallons of water if they flush each time. That's 30 gallons of drinking water wasted on you peeing in a hole. Kind of an inefficient system.

I can't take it...I always flush. We do have our own well, too.

I always flush. I can't leave the room unless it is flushed. Letting it sit there just stinks up the toilet.

every must flush in my house. if you dont that a fight right there!
04/21/2012
I wake up and go once or twice every night. So I don't flush until the morning. During the day we always flush. It's a noise issue for me, not a water issue.
04/21/2012
We always flush my house, but I also installed dual flush toilets which help save water.
04/21/2012
We flush every time. I don't want to pee in the toilet where someone else's pee is sitting there in the toilet bowl. I'd be scared their pee would splash on me. Gross!

That's what my mom says (I always flush at her house), but I feel like pee is cleaner than the stagnant toilet bowl water that would splash on you otherwise. Except for first thing in the morning my pee is usually clear and odorless, so I "let it mellow" for quite a while without anyone realizing. But it's usually the norm where I live.

Here I'm more concerned about our cat drinking out of the toilet than the water being absolutely pristine for the next person who uses it. My grandparents former lake-house had a really iffy septic setup so they only flushed when someone went number 2. Wasn't a big deal. So for me, I'll go with what makes the most sense for the house. Other people's pee in the bowl doesn't really ick my out, but anything else and you really should flush it.

I ALWAYS flush. To reduce the amount of water we use when flushing my husband filled two two liter bottles with water and put them in the back of the tank. Less water has to fill the tank now and our water usage and bill has decreased a ton.

I pee A LOT so I flush maybe every fourth time I pee, so that's like twice a day.

Urine is sterile when it is first passed. However, bacteria grows on it pretty rapidly once it is out of the sterile urinary tract.
The smell of urine bothers me a bit (working in health care sometimes desensitizes you to things, and other times sensitizes you to things. I'm sensitized to the smell of stale urine and don't like my house to smell like it.)
I flush every time. We have a private well for our water system and live in an area with plenty of fresh water, so I am not concerned about it. Plus our pee and poo go into a septic system, where they break down and are pumped out once a year or so (in a much reduced form) by a septic company we hire to do this job. They usually incinerate the contents and... I don't know what they do with the ashes.

Ya know, I didn't think about the electricity costs. (We have a well and septic, too.) I have an extremely sensitive sense of smell and if someone "lets it mellow" I can smell the urine even after the toilet has been flushed and then have to bring out poisonous chemicals to clean the toilet, inside and out. I really can't stand the smell of urine.

However, we have a wind turbine that The Man is going to eventually hook up to the well pump so we can run it for free! At the moment, he's cutting the acre with our riding mower whose battery was charged by the wind. Yay renewable energy! Have you guys thought about wind power or solar power yet? It's a great investment and you get a tax break on your equipment cost the first year.

I don't flush every single time at home if I just pee because I'm the only one who uses the toilet (I have a two-year-old in diapers).
