I use a datebook that has about two inches of space for a single day, so it's mostly highlights of my day. A couple of times it can get ranty, but the small space helps in not feeling a writer's block come on with a whole page of lines.
After about six years of it, I'm able to go back and see what's going on psychologically and see what patterns develop. It's actually helped me a lot in keeping track of events that I need to revisit when my mind's fuzzy about what happened.
