Do you bite your nails or chew them?

Contributor: wrecklesswords wrecklesswords
I am sadly a person who does both. It's been a habit of mine since I can remember. I've been taking more proactive steps in the last year to stop it than I ever have. It's had it's major ups and downs.

I did find some Stop The Bite top coat that tastes absolutely horrendous that I've been using. It tastes almost like a rotten chemical, if chemicals could even spoil. It's terrible and stays in my mouth for at least an hour after, even if I brush or use gum.

Do you bite? Have you been able to stop and what methods did you use?

I used to bite/chew them as a teen but no longer do that. I always use nail clippers.

I got a pair of travel nail clippers so I stopped biting them around 3 years ago. I do get tempted to but it doesn't bother me enough to do it and I really don't know...how to anymore. If that makes sense.

I don't bite or chew my nails. I do, however, pick at my cuticles more than I should. But I find I do it less when I keep my nails painted... then I want them to stay looking nice.

I've never chewed or bitten my nails. When I was very young I did use to chew on my hair, though.

I bite and chew my nails and have since I was a little kid... I tried using that fingernail polish, but it just didn't work for me... I can go several weeks without doing it now, but it's a nervous tick so sometimes I find myself doing it without realizing...

I've been biting my nails for years. It's to the point where they don't even grown in right. After a certain point, they just split or something.

I did when I was younger. Now, I have a horrible habit of picking at my cuticles when I'm nervous. I hate it and wish I could make it stop, but I can't seem to. I can have long, beautiful nails, but gross, sore cuticles!

I used to bite my nails when I was younger but as a teen I had acrylic nails for a long while and that broke my habit. Now that I have natural nails again I do pick at them when I'm uptight but I'm trying to stop doing that too.

Mine seem to stop at a certain point as well before becoming too brittle to continue on.

It makes me pretty sad.

Honestly, if you think of all the stuff your hands go through its really gross to put the in your mouth. Fingernails harbor bacteria under them too. I guess being a nurse gives you a different prespective on things lol.

I've never been a nail biter as I'm too aware of germs on hands.

Oh yeah, there's tons of nasty stuff all over our bodies. I'm kind of from the mindset that we have nastiness all over us. Where we sit, where we stand, what we stand in (shoes), etc. It's how clean we keep ourselves that matters. Because if we start to focus too much on the millions of bacteria that we house on our bodies and in our homes, we'd all be too afraid to do anything.

I used to bite my fingernails but I broke the habit - forcibly a long time ago. I do however tend to chew on my lips when not paying attention and results in them being chapped most of the time.

Life-long nail biter/chewer. It's recently been classified as an obsessive-compulsive disorder, so I feel slightly better that it's not a "defect of character" like everyone else tries to make it out to be.

I've been able to stop a few times and allow my nails to grow, but they're so thin and brittle (by genetics) that they bend and break or just split about 1/8-inch beyond my nail bed. My nail beds are also extremely short, which I do attribute to the biting. I managed to go about three months of not biting, then a time of transition happened and I began the nervous biting again. Oh, and I'm a high-strung type.

I've just started taking prenatal vitamins to strengthen them, so I'll attempt to grow them again.
