I have mild depression because I'm chronically ill and going through a rough time lately. I try to exercise, get some sun, and keep myself busy.

In my late teenage years, I was raped. I held it in too long and received help when I finally went to therapy. I still take medications and it is a constant battle.

I'm very sorry for your losses. I went through a phase. I had no idea I was going through depression. I just started noticing differences in myself I wasn't acting like myself. I would just say and do certain things without even noticing that these things made me look bad, I wouldn't even think twice about it. Later in the day I would look back and think " what the hell was I thinking, this is not me". And I would just feel horrible but I could help but to act negatively toward people and situations. I would feel sad and cry like every night. And I was getting drunk most days of the week. And this is totally not me, I love myself, I am positive, kind towards people, encouraging, and very respectful. I dint feel like any of that at this point. I had given up yoga and meditating and that time. When I finally realized it was getting out of hand and I had to do something about it, I decided to get back to the yoga and meditation. and believe it or not, just by doing that, I started getting better, slowly but surely. I started thinking differently, acting differently, I started feeling like myself again. I definitely recommend yoga and meditation if u are feeling depressed. You will feel a difference immediately after doing it. But the thing is you cannot expect a change within a week, you have to keep doing it. Be persistent, and definitely be patient. Especially if you are new to it. I have been practicing meditation for over 3 years and still haven't completely mastered it. It takes time and alot of patience. But even if you don't have it mastered, just doing the whole breathing technique and letting yourself relax for about 30 mins a day. Even if you fall asleep while doing it, it will still have an effect on you and it will still make a great difference. At least give it a try, you really have nothing to lose, but a lot to gain.

My first suicide attempt was at the age of 11. I understand what you're going through. As a "lifer," my advice is that when things seem hopeless with your life, focus on anything but yourself. When I am suicidal, I bake cookies for a neighbor, telling myself I can't die today because I have to give the neighbor cookies tomorrow. Sometimes I write a letter to a friend about how much I love them, and tell myself I can't mail it until tomorrow.

If you find it difficult, try yoga. It's also used as meditation. It is very relaxing. Try these videos on YouTube: Surya Namaskar, sun salutation for beginners. By YogaVidyaEnglish. You should see a guy with blue shirt and white pants.
