You will find that any food that is not in season (or can't be grown locally in your area) has to be shipped from where it is in season. Also, I am sure Walmart uses a pretty large food distributor and has much of their food delivered in large quantities from long distances.
All this means that the time between harvest and purchase is increased and the likelyhood that the food you are buying is nearly about to or already has gone bad...is higher.
It's also why I, like JR, try to stick with stores that source regionally and I tend to buy what's in season. It can't always be done, but you get better results when you can buy something you know to be grown locally. less
