It seems that stores push these warranties on just about everything now. Must be very profitable for them. However, on electronics, camera gear, and major home appliances, I always buy it and have gotten my money's worth many times over.

As someone who sells people added warranties for various things, it is profitable to get people to buy them. And in most of the cases it pays out for the customer as well (least from mine and friends/family experiences).

Personally I only get them when it comes to a purchase that I'm serious about, like a camera or some electronic item, or luggage or something like that where I expect it to last quite a long time. Most of the time it pays off if something happens to the item, and if it doesn't then for paying whatever the price for the warranty over however many years its good for is nice enough for the peace of mind if you ask me. less

On laptops, tablets, cameras and portable DVD players, I have probably gotten five times back what I paid for in extended warranties and with cell phones...oh my!!! Wouldn't leave the store without it in place. However for garden hoses, and lawn rakes (honest, they offered)..um, not so much. less
