BMI -- where do you stand?

Contributor: badk1tty badk1tty
More than a few people I know have made comments that people who get into X practice are usually Y. "People into bondage are usually fat", "people who make dirty videos are usually skinny", etc. These types of flippant, off-the-hip comments usually are untrue, but they did get me to thinking: Is the EF like America, with a decent bit being overweight? So I've supplied you with a BMI CHART, to see how we all stack up.

I'm right between healthy and overweight depending on my current weight which fluctuates. Right now I am overweight but I go between the 5lbs that makes the difference

LOL my guy couldn't do this because his height isn't listed

It's hard to find appropriate information for a guy who is 6'7

High end of overweight and pretty okay with that.

Low end of healthy. I gain a bit of weight when I get back in the gym and eat more regularly, but when I'm stressed or sick I lose weight.

I find the waist-to-hip ratio calculation to be MUCH more accurate than the BMI scale
I bulk up muscle like nothing else, so even when I was starving myself and had my ribs showing I clocked in as overweight. If I ride my bicycle more than a few times a week I start putting on the pounds!

Highly underweight and I hate it

I think BMI tends to be pretty deceiving, but in any case, I've almost always fallen into the "healthy" category, though in high school I was more on the underweight side.

This is sad. I can't be obese, I have muscle weight and I still fit a size 16.

I'm apparently at a 28% (almost obese)at 5ft 7in and 185lbs. I shouldn't be labeled as obese, I have a very pronounced hourglass figure(with 36DDD chest) and a lot of lower body muscle. This BMI chart needs to be destroyed. -_-.

Slightly underweight, but for my size I'm not too bad. I'm 93 lbs and was 70! Now I'm only a few lbs underweight, but the 90's are a healthy weight for me. My family's just petite

I'm at a healthy weight and I could either gain or lose a few and still be considered healthy so I guess I'm good. Like some have mentioned, the BMI isn't a very good tool b/c it doesn't account for muscle mass. Someone could be 5'11 250 solid muscle or 5'11 250 solid fat and it wouldn't differentiate. Of course the solid muscle is healthier, but the BMI doesn't show that.

Mine is 21.6, so I'm in the middle of the "healthy" range.

Oh, I know. It's obviously not the end all be all, but it's a fairly reasonable gauge for most people, and the easiest poll to use without specific tools.

I hate looking at my weight. I am 5ft 3in and range between 160-170, I am only going to be 23 next month and am overweight or obese. It is depressing, but my family is all extremely obese and I am the most petite one in it.

The BMI chart doesn't work for all cases. The military started using the chart back in the 80's, it identified me as literally off the chart obese and I started getting warnings that if I didn't get with the chart they'd kick me out.

It was crazy because I had very low bodyfat for competing as a powerlifter/bodybuilde r. In typical bureaucratic fashion, only the chart was consulted, not anyone's eyes to see that I was fit.

Finally, they ordered me to have a bodyfat test (5.5% at 5'8" and 225) and a military doctor helped me get a waiver, so they wouldn't kick me out.

The chart says I'm underweight according to my BMI but I know that I'm at a healthy weight. I've also suffered from anorexia nervosa and I've put on close to 20lbs.

While I'm not super into bondage just yet, I do really enjoy it and I'm not close to being overweight. That sounds silly.

I don't trust BMI- they don't accurately account for muscle mass in the body. For instance, I weight 165 pounds, but I have a 36 inch bust, 30 inch waist, and 44 inch hips. I have more muscle than fat on my body, but my BMI tells me I have 30 pounds of fat more than I should. Numbers numbers numbers, don't trust em! If you feel good, then that's what matters.

I'm in the middle of the overweight catagory, but I don't look it at all. I look about 20 lb less than I actually am because of the way my body fills out, and I love it. Still want to lose some weight for the sake of being healthy.

25, so apparently healthy. My girl is apparently just on the side of underweight, according to this chart, but she's really not at all.

The BMI chart is ludicrous, as it doesn't take into account build and muscle mass.
I'm a healthy weight for my strange build, but have a BMI of 27.
My little cousin would probably rank extremely obese, since his muscles are ripped from here to eternity.

Always need to lose those extra few pounds...but we ARE both doing it. We have our daughters wedding next year and by george, we WILL be skinny for it (and great dancers too...with twice a week lessons for over a year when it comes around)!!!!

My BMI is 21, but as others have said, I don't really gauge my body size by that. If I look and feel healthy, eat right, and don't have a lot of fat, then I consider that to be healthy.

I forgot, our employer is now MAKING US use that same BMI chart on our annual physical and our insurance rates go UP, UP, UP if we do not "drop categories" with each annual visit, till "normal".
