I knew about it, but it doesn't particularly affect me, since Black Widows aren't in my area. But, if they were, then I wouldn't be fearful, merely wary (as I am now with our venomous spiders).
Black Widows

All spiders I hate, once walked right through a big web and it covered my whole face, and when I opened my eyes I seen a huge black spider dangling from my face in a big ball of web.
Oh god just remembering that makes me shiver.

Kids play in my yard sometimes. I'm not going to chance little kids getting bit by something I could have killed. It's just not worth the chance.

Things might have been different if I was at a field and saw one of these. I would have probably ran in the other direction, but there is no room for these kinds of spiders when you are talking about kids. I did read that these kinds of bites rarely cause death in adults. BUT...the death rate for children is more likely, because they are so small.

i saw one on my friend's farm this weekend. it creeped me out a bit, and i didnt want her to be anywhere near me, but other than that, she has a right to be out there in the field just as much as i do. less

Thanks wildorchid. I had no idea I'd have people taking the spider's side here.

You are right, I did what I felt I had to do. I don't go out looking for these things. I'm by far, NOT a black widow hunter. And most of the time, if I see a spider outside, I run into the house because I don't want to mess with it! But not this one...

Thanks Kendra! Thank goodness I don't have panic attacks, but if you had listened to my heart beat, you would have thought I had just ran a marathon. It's just a natural reaction of my body.

Amen to that! Me too! I know some of you don't understand killing things, but when we're talking TERRIFIED, it's different. I think she actually has a real fear of them and that is one hell of a dangerous creature she found. I'll kill any S-word I see no matter how small the damage they can cause. I'm too scared of them. I've had some nasty encounters and they cause me to have horrible panic attacks... at 5AM wearing nothing but a shirt (nothing!) and standing on a chair, shivering and having a panic attack when my wonderful dad comes to the rescue. Hell yes I kill em'! When you're THAT scared of something, I say you do what ya gotta do.

AHHH! There is no way you could pay me enough to do something like that! I don't care if it's poisonous or not, I don't want to feel all of their hairy legs on me.

I knew their webs were spiderman strength b/c my husband just tore one down and told me about how strong they were. He crawled under the house and found her and killed her too. We have 2 kids we have to lookout for.

I didn't know they didn't have to have the red hourglass. I have seen a few spiders around that look like small brown black widows, and now I'm wondering if they were the real deal.
I only kill venemous spiders if they're in my house. The rest I just take outside.

Spiders generally don't bother me (though I'm never eager to have them actually crawling on my person), but I am more wary around the more venomous varieties. We're on the far edge of venomous spider territory so it's not something I've run into personally, but I understand the desire to protect your kids especially, since any venomous animal is more dangerous to children than to adults.

Love the south. We have black widows, brown recluses, as well as copperheads, cottonmouths and rattlers. Eeep.

I dont like poisonous things, spiders snakes ect.. But I am not really scared of them. We dont really have any that live around us. On of the good things about living in the pacific northwest where I do.

Spiders and snakes are actually venomous, not poisonous. Basically, venom is injected, while poison is ingested.

Okay, so I was out in the yard and noticed some some trash by one of my bushes. I went to go grab it and I felt a spiderweb and shrieked. This web was really strong and sticky. We are talking Spiderman strength. I have never felt a web like this before. It was not silky and wispy like most webs. I immediately backed away and saw a black widow sitting there in the web. She started to run off, making her way down to the ground, and ran into a tunnel she had burrowed. I could not believe my eyes. She had a tunnel!! I coaxed her out and killed her with a flat shovel while saying "die mother f*cker!!" I felt accomplished and a little more relieved.
I also used a stick to tear down the web, and the web actually made a crackling noise (kind of like static) when I broke it. So strange...
I wanted to find out some information on black widows so I looked up some information on them and found this on Wikipedia:
"Not all adult female black widows exhibit the red hourglass on the ventrum or underside of the abdomen — some may have a pair of red spots or have no marking at all. Female black widows often exhibit various red markings on the dorsal or top side of the abdomen, commonly two red spots. However, it is believed that black widow young have at least some sort of marking on their abdomens. Adult male black widows are a quarter the size of the female, and are usually gray or brown rather than black and red; while they may sometimes have an hourglass marking on their ventral abdomen, it is usually yellow or white, not red."
So now, I can't rely on the 'black spider with a red marking' description of this spider I am so frightened of. Who am I kidding...?! I am scared of all spiders, but now even more so that one could be a black widow and I wouldn't know it.
Did you know this about black widows (not all of them being black or having markings? And are you deathly scared of them like me? less

I don't like any sort of spiders. I really don't take the time to look at their markings...I just A) kill them, or B) run!
04/06/2012
I'm not afraid of spiders, and I don't discriminate either. I kill all the ones that I see, with the exception of the cute fly spiders who sit in the windows minding their own business doing their job.
