Bed by the window/vent or bed by the wall?

Contributor: Ryuson Ryuson
I'm moving into the dorms tomorrow, and I'm probably going to get first pick of the beds! One is by the window, but is also directly over the heating/cooling vent, while the other is by the wall! Which would you pick?

I wouldn't pick the one right under the vent.

Directly under the vent may be problematic if you and your roommate have opposite temperature preferences!

ours is by the wall

I would have a difficult time being under the window, it affects my dreams.

Besides temperature preferences, it's also not fun to have air blowing right above you whenever the system kicks in, you might get bad headaches in the long run.

I haven't had to pick my own bed in a dorm room, but I preferred when boyfriends had beds near the windows. I like easily feeling a breeze and being able to watch the rain/snow. Being over the vent could be a problem in the winter with a lot of heat coming up from under your bed.

That's good point about watching the rain! But the vent seems to be the main problem people are seeing~ I might go for the wall if I have the choice!

I like being by the wall, too! I'm always cold, though, so being by the vent is no fun for me.

If your dorms are anything like mine were, you're going to appreciate being directly under the vent when the crappy heating/ac can't keep up with the temperature outside...lol!

I'd go for the window. I like sleeping by the window and the vents don't bother me any.

Our dorms had small rooms all to ourselves with common rooms. I think Id have gone crazy with a roommate who was actually in the same room. Id pick by the vent.

When I was in college, I chose the bed under the window! I love sleeping by a window, but I have to agree with others who point out the vent. Is the heating/air controlled in your room or controlled across the whole floor? The RA was responsible for the temperature in each of my dorms, so it always remained average and would make being over the vent of no concern to me (since I would've known it could never be an extreme hot/cold due to my roomie's personal preference).

The wall was winning for a bit, but the window is making a comeback!

Rather than moving my bed to a certain spot relative to the other items in the room, I decide what all would fit where IN the room and arrange them and the bed accordingly. All I am picky about is NOT placing the bed on the South wall. Don't ask why, I have no clue.

The rooms are 14" by 14", so there isn't a lot of room for two people to be moving the beds and desks around! Thanks for the response!

I like my bed by the window so I get a good fresh breeze flowing in, in summer.

Wall it! Especially if the sun comes through the window, like if you're room is at an angle that catches a lot of sun. You could be waking up drenched in sweat every morning. I hated that! I had to move my bed. We ended up doing a bunk like arrangement.

That's a good point, but I won't be in school too much when it's warm out!

Personally, I would pick by the wall but only because I don't like my bed below a window. The vent isn't a huge issue because you can probably buy a small re-director to point the airflow away if it is directly on you.

I would go by the window. Even if the window does not open up.
