Be honest. How often do you reply to a thread without reading the responses before yours?

Contributor: Antipova Antipova
I guess it depends on the type of thread. Some are just "do you like your cookies baked or dough?"---and then I feel fine typing what I think before I read the thread.

For hot topics where there are conflicts, I'll read everything first to see if the situation was resolved (and usually, it is, within the first 2-3 pages!)

I go by feel, but I can count on one hand the number of times where I just replied to the OP, and then after posting read the thread to find that my reply was off-topic from the rest of the discussion.

As others before me have said (see? I do read! ), I will read every post before replying to more serious topics. On more light-hearted topics, I will often respond to specific readers as I make my way through the discussion. On simple questionnaires on which reading everyone's responses will not change my own answer (like the question about what I had for breakfast or what my favorite clit vibe is), I will just respond and then skim everyone's answers. If it is an old (over two years, for example) discussion that is over eight pages long, I might read all the responses, but that depends on the topic and how interested I am (though I admit that if I am uninterested, it would be quite rare for me to respond). When a thread to which I have already responded and through which I have already read pops up again, I never reread all the responses, but I will read the most up-to-date comments if the discussion is multiple pages long (we have long discussions on this forum with pages in the double digits and beyond!). Oh, and when I attend live meetings and am already several pages behind, I jump in a few pages behind to try to catch up and then go back to read what I'd missed at the start of the meeting once the meeting is over (I struggle to keep up enough as it is during the Porn Club meetings).

One answer that could have been listed on your poll would be "I sometimes respond to specific comments before reading every post on a thread, but I always finish reading all comments on a thread on which I post. If the tone has changed or if my opinion has changed by the time I reach the end of it, I will post accordingly." I think this answer fits me best (it should since I tailored it specifically to suit me). But since this response was not available, I chose "I sometimes simply put my opinion without reading to see what others have written before me."

Sometimes I do but i usually skim and if one catches my eye I will read it. If it's a topic I am highly interested in I'll read more. Usually if it's an strong opinion based thing I just throw my thought out there.

Ya, most of the time I read the whole thing first. Like others, I have had to chew on some crow when I posted before reading. The thing about crow, it does not taste good no matter what kind of sauce you put on it.

Eh. Depends. A lot of the time I don't want to read 7 pages of the same shit, so I skim through looking for major changes in tone or subject matter. I typically read through the first two or three pages, then skim the rest until I get to the most recent comments if it's an epic post. If it's a relatively short thread then I prefer to read through all the responses.

Most of the time I read comments before I post, but if there's pages and pages of posts, then I don't go through them all. I love reading what other people have to say though.

(For the record, I chose the third option, but it's not wholly accurate; I often post my opinion/advice/stateme nt or whatever else before I read ALL of the other comments, but still read many or even most first. The options could have afforded a bit more room, they're slightly absolute!)

I wish I had added your suggestion to the poll. It seems to make a lot of sense that "fun" or "fluff" threads really don't need to be read to keep up, and its hard to keep up with Live threads.

This exactly. In fact, many times I'll read all the posts and then decide not to add my own post because I can't add anything of interest/importance/et c. That's why I have only cashed in points once, and I only got ten bucks haha.

I definitely am an occasional offender of the post-then-read affliction. Then I smack myself on the forehead, and if I made a mistake, I fix it in another post ^^;;

I ESPECIALLY hate when I post to ask a question about a problem, the problem is solved AND I TELL EVERYONE IT'S SOLVED, and later on keep getting responses to the post giving me answers because no one has read my later posts. Rawr. >_>

It depends on many factors including, but not limited to:

- How long the thread already is when I first find it
- How interesting/ important the topic is
- How much time I have
- If my skim of the first page only finds five word or less posts
- If some of the most inspiring or my fav people have posted

But, seriously, for threads that are already really insanely long, unless I'm particularly moved (which has certainly happened), I'm not going to read it all. I'd miss the bulk of the conversation or just run out of time to reply. Especially when it comes to meetings, parties, etc.
Or if they're just people responding to a poll or question of "does this apply to you?" or "what is your opinion?" then it one can either choose just to share their piece and move on without checking out any of the other responses or to engage in discussion. Both of those choices are just fine and legitimate. There's no requirement to post.

And I definitely agree with SS's take on it. Especially the "comment as I read through and post a change or addition in my first opinion accordingly." I don't recall every having a 'problem' with posting my answer first, checking out what others said, and then adding a new post with "So-and-so really got me thinking and now I want to say this because I'm inspired to do so!" As long as I'm respectful, polite, and light-hearted at the beginning with whatever I post, reading the thread or not, how can it possibly bother anyone?

All the time!!! I just did it with this one. Seriously though I do but then usually (if I remember) I will read the replies before hitting enter. It really depends on whether the topic is truly controversial.

If it's a long thread - or even a short one with a lot of alike answers or long answers, I won't bother. I'm busy enough as it is without spending my time reading posts on this place. And yes, I read none of these responses before answering.

but, to be honest, with a lot of threads - not discussion threads but ones like 'what are you listening to?' -, you don't really need to read the other posts.

I usually don't read ALL of the responses. Some are soooo long and I just don't have the time (unless it's something that I REALLY want to read). If it's short, I'll read them all, but longer ones, not so much.

No sarcasm, I was being genuine. lol

Actually, after this was posted, I've tried to become better about reading threads. If it's over three pages long, I'll usually skip it and not respond. However, if it's shorter, or if I've been keeping up with it, I'll continue to respond. I try to make sure that my responses are within the context of the conversation and the question.

I agree with Darling Jenn here...

Sometimes, I could be researching for a class, so I will take the time to read the whole thread. And chances are... a few people have covered my opinion so there is no point in making a comment.

And sometimes, if it is just an opinion post, I'll just skim.

Threads that make me chuckle are the ones where someone creates a poll for helping them choose a toy. They include "other please explain". Then they are not happy with the explanation that people voice.

I usually don't read the other posts.

there have been times that I haven't just posted.

If I feel strongly about something - I just post.

On one hand: The OP is asking all of us our opinion on something. I don't need to read everyone else's before I've formed mine.

On the other hand: Someone's opinion can always be changed or even debated in a thread, good points made and minds changed. That can be a good thing.

I almost always read all the comments if I'm going to make a comment of my own. If feel like, if I don't have time to do that, then I don't have time to comment, either. I will sometimes skim a bit, especially if people are saying the same thing over and over. And sorry to admit it, but I often skim long comments.

I usually comment only if I have something to say that hasn't already been said better than I would've said it, or if I want to support something someone else said. Or if someone said something I don't quite understand and I'd like them to clarify.
