I am one of the less fortunate souls that still has one of those totally awesome flip phones with the pull out keyboard. Just talking and texting, nothing else. I would love to get a smart-phone, but still can't justify the expense of getting a data plan. How important is this to you in your daily life?
Are you embarrassed by your cell phone?

I have a Blackberry, and I love it because it's new but organized and not overly complicated. I'm not attached to it by any means, and I don't use the internet all that much, either, so I pay for the bare minimum you have to pay.

My current phone is the first one I've had with a data plan, but I find I really don't need Internet access while out. I'm happy with a phone that calls and texts.

Eh, I'm 19, and my phone is just the basic flip phone you'd get at any ol' AT&T.
I just... am not a huge fan of phones, period. I prefer it if people have messengers, and to a lesser extent, Facebook, so, when I have time, I can chat with them real time by typing. It's just more comfortable to me. So, I only use my phone for emergencies.
I wouldn't mind upgrading my phone to have a better key arrangement for texting, but it's no big deal to me, honestly. I also don't need a handheld computer with me every step of my life, so, while I appreciate the advancement in technology, I can be more than satisfied with the basics when it comes to phones. Cheaper too.

I couldn't care less what people think about my phone, so no, it doesn't embarrass me at all. I have a flat phone with a fairly large screen, similar to a "smart phone" but it isn't a smart phone. It was close to being a test phone, that has a temperature sensitive screen which Motorola dropped after one product because of issues with your face changing modes while you are on it. (if the heat from your cheek touches the screen and you haven't locked it, it can cut you off or change modes. Also, it switches to "mute" or "speaker" without my wanting it to, and is nearly impossible to use when your hands are cold or wet. Meh. I can always call people later or back.
I rarely text, and I get frustrated when I do it.
I don't want to be accessible all the time, nor do I want to be online all the time (is the timing of my bowel movements something that everyone in my inner circle of 1000 people need to be Tweeted about every few hours?) I don't need the internet on my phone. I have enough expenses and spend enough time online on my desk top computer.
So, I don't really care. I had a flip phone until it died about a year and a half ago. I think I had that one for about 5 or more years. I call people with it, and it stores my numbers, because I can't remember shit. It lets me know who is calling, so I can ignore junk phone calls, and I can choose from about 10 different ring tones. So, it does what I want it to. It calls people.

I have a not-exactly-smart phone (a palm pre) and it's my first time having a data plan. The internet is not nearly fast enough to be considered amazing, but I love being able to google things when I'm out and about. Plus, it combines a touch screen with a smaller keyboard. I hate the height-width keyboards that are standard with touch/qwerty phones.

My phone doesn't even text.
12/05/2011
I have a smartphone but I wouldn't be embarrassed to use an older model.

I guess I have what is called a "dumb phone"? It's not a flip phone, but it has seen all nine circles of hell and back. It doesn't have a back, it's been dropped in water, soda, paint, etc. and yet it still serves its purpose: to text and make phone calls. I can't say I'm embarrassed by it; instead, I'm so proud that it's withstood that kind of damage (knock on wood)
I wanted an Iphone for a while, but I couldn't justify spending 100$ a month on a phone when I have to pay my rent and other utilities. I'll gladly stick with my Superman phone instead.

I have a smart-phone about a year old and am eagerly awaiting when I can upgrade it. Mine was cutting-edge at the time but is outdated now.
I read a lot on the net, and I use my phone near-constantly. It's a highly portable extension of my computer. Also, my partner texts me regularly, so.

I have a keyboard phone, but it's really not data compatible. Next time I get a new phone I might HAVE to get the data plan (which I DON'T want) so I have to take care of the one I have!
12/06/2011
I don't have a smart phone either. Mine flips open lengthwise with a keyboard on it for texting. I can access the internet on it, but's a PITA so I don't bother. I'm not embarrassed. It works fine, does everything I need it to, and it was free - I'm actually proud of that! I don't plan on replacing it until it's broken.

I have a smartphone, and I'm so used to it that I don't know what I'd do without it. I use the GPS, internet search, and email constantly. I'm not embarrassed by it, but I do sometimes worry about it getting stolen.

I am not embarrassed by my old school phone at all. In fact, I have a strange kind of pride in it. I've always been a hold-out against new technology, proud to be satisfied with simpler things. I only upgrade when I absolutely have to. When my beloved old Razr finally broke, my friend gave me his hand-me-down phone with a slide-out keyboard and that was plenty new for me.

i don't have a cell phone.

If I made more I wouldn't mind as much the fact that buying a new phone will cost $200, on top of a contract which will amount to about $1000/year. I'd love to get a snazzy new phone, but after my ceiling leaked onto my old one a week or two after I took it off insurance, and my year and a half old computer died not long after, I can't justify spending much on electronics right now. There's always something new and 'improved' out there. No need to spend tons of money all the time on something that's continually going to be outdated and depreciate in value. More than likely the item will stop working in a few years anyways.

I hope you have insurance!! Especially since a lot of things in your life would be effected by not having it!

There are advantages and disadvantages.
I'm happy with my phone. I use it primarily for texting. Having used a smart phone and hearing about my friend's experience - the battery life is much, much worse and it can crash just like the mini computer it is.
My phone is largely problem-free and holds a charge for over a week. It has a keyboard that's comfortable and easy to use.
Mostly, people just notice my phone skin and compliment it if anything.

I recently broke my fancy phone, and I am now using my old cell... and I'm happier!

My phone has to have all the bells and whistles. I feel empty without a connection to the internet.

I Have a really crappy phone, in the spring i'm getting an iphone, i hope.

I love my Droid Incredible, but what I don't love is the $80/mo because I have unlimited data.
Only 10 months more and then I can switch to Virgin Mobile...

^ Be careful with Virgin Mobile. It ONLY works with Sprint towers.
If you have GREAT Sprint tower coverage, it can work - but if you don't, it's kind of spotty and crappy. My mom tried Virgin Mobile and gave up on it because of all the places it wouldn't get a signal.
If you have regular Sprint now, you get to roam on Verizon towers, giving you a LOT more coverage.

I have a BlackBerry, which I love, but it's also pretty much the cheapest one possible (I paid $79). I love having the extras, but I could certainly live without.

I don't see a cell phone (or any other technical device) as something to be embarrassed about, though. It's not like it's a reflection of who you are as a person.

I have a typical, slide keyboard phone. There's no data plan, I have limited text messages and I prefer to talk to people on my network so it doesn't cost me anything.
I want a Blackberry; my husband has one and a good friend has one and I'd like to be able to message them through the Blackberry service instead of eating text messages every time I think I have something clever to say. Alas, RIM is having difficulty keeping up with the HTC and Motorola phones so they may not be around much longer.

It makes phone calls, it texts. My phone is capable of the data stuff, and has a touch screen, but I can't stand it, and refuse to pay for it. I miss my little blackberry that didn't have a touch screen, but still had a nice keyboard, and never randomly connected to the internet.

I do not want touch screen but I do want a better phone. I still have the slider phones as well, just mine is the one that does not have the key board I do not like those. I have internet, talk, and text overall I am happy, but do want a better phone, so I can check on my Eden more often

It makes calls, it can just barely text. I talk through it, I do not talk to it, it does not talk back. I am pleased with this arrangement.
