I absolutely don't believe in making a child clean their plate. I remember once when I was younger my parents wouldn't let me go play on the playground because I hadn't finished my milkshake! I was always overweight as a child except for the brief period when I had a growth spurt and was normal, but I was still hearing so much negative from my family.

Forcing children to eat, especially to "The Clean Plate Club" or things like "one more bite for mommy" or "You have to at least taste everything." has been found to be one of the most common causes of obesity. Of course, if force is used, it's even worse.
I had abdominal migraines as a child, (severe belly aches and nausea that are related to and evolve into head migraines) as well as food allergies. My pediatrician had to take both my mother and my grandparents aside and make it clear that if he heard I was being forced to eat anything he'd call DCFS. He was a force to be reckoned with, my Ped. If anyone said anything to me at the table, I'd quote, "Dr. P said "Never force a child to eat." He said so, he's right." I was 3 or 4 at the time. I was a force to be reckoned with, too. less

In our house, with our kids, we don't make our kids eat if they are not hungry. However, if you want seconds of...whatever... you should eat your salad/veggies first.
I was actually concerned about one of our kids because he was always underweight. It turns out this is a characteristic of young males in my husband's family and is nothing to be concerned about. But sometimes he just wouldn't eat at meals. I talked to the ped about it and she was completely unconcerned and said it's very normal for kids to just not eat sometimes and as long as it is being offered and he is healthy, then everything is fine.
