When Do You Trim Your Tree?

Contributor: Kayla Kayla
We'll probably put up our tree right after Thanksgiving Break. It's not like it's that hard to put up. Ours is just a little table-top tree due to fire regulations and our inability to have a tree in the apartment.

By the way, that's totally not what I thought this poll was about. I feel like a dirty pervert.

We usually wait until the first week of December to put up stuff, and we kind of go all out.

We have a fake tree (I have big time tree allergies). I love Christmas time.

This is my first year living by myself! (First apartment )and I'm trying to start some of my own traditions. I plan on getting my tree the first weekend in December and hope to have my place looking like a winter wonderland by the end of the weekend! My tree has always been decorated with home-made ornaments from my childhood that my momma saved! Stringing popcorn and cranberries is also pretty fun!

I wonder how I could have phrased it differently ... ?

But at least some folks got some chuckles out of it.

I usually trim the tree a week or maybe 2 if my roomie or I have extra fancy holiday visions. We're contemplating putting gifts under a menorah this year.

I can't wait for Christmas. I love Christmas! Three days before Halloween I was starting to sing "White Christmas" everyone around me just groaned. I usually try to rush us through the Thanksgiving meal in order to begin dragging decorations out; all the while, my husband and son are rolling their eyes thinking, "Oh crap! She's gonna make us untangle the Christmas lights!"

They don't allow trees in your apartment? Scrooges!

We do ours later, because real trees tend to really lose needles when they get more than a week old and I hate cleaning those up for weeks.

As for the poll, I was ready to answer, "Oh, usually in the shower or bath."

And then half of them, which worked perfectly when you put them away last January, don't work for some reason. Then there is swearing, and My Man (who is an engineer) used to try to FIX them. OMG. Finally, I said to him, "They're like, a few dollars a string. THROW THEM AWAY and we'll buy new ones."

I'm not sure when my family does it anymore...a few weeks before xmas I think.

I personally have started to do it in my own apartment mid December after finals are over.

I started decorating the tree at work the day after Thanksgiving. Had to stop because a string out lights is busted out.

I wish I had space for a real tree (studio apartment with baby). My parents usually put up a silver fake one the second week into December. I am hoping next year I can go get a u-cut it tree. I am not of the Christian faith, but there is nothing like a fresh tree and crazy gifts.

Typically we do it on the Friday after Thanksgiving. For the past couple of years, though, it hasn't gotten done until I got sick of seeing the storage boxes full of Christmas decorations sitting all over the living room and put everything up. My mom used to be pretty regular about getting this kind of stuff done, but now it just seems she only wants to sleep all day and complain. I don't think I am going to bother doing any of the decorating this year, cause she yelled at me for "doing it wrong" last year,

We usually do our tree in the middle of December. We like to get a real one for our daughter to enjoy.. and it makes the whole house smell like fir tree

This year we went with a fraser fir tree, definitely our most beautiful tree yet!

It is a beautiful tree, Shumway. How did you get the image so big? My tree looks tiny in comparison.

(Is that a baby nursing chair behind it? )

we did not do a tree this year, work has been really slow. But in the years past, we go out thanksgiving weekend or the weekend after to cut one.

Your tree looks gorgeous P'Gell!

Yes that is a baby nursing chair. It was given to me by my aunt when I had my daughter and we are keeping it for a while longer..

I like how Shums says the real tree is for our daughter to enjoy. I mean, she loves it but would be fine with any old tree either way. I think it's more for us.

Typically we don't do a tree. Because we're never here for christmas. If we do it's just a small 2ft tree. I didn't even drag that out this year though.

We usually don't put up a tree. We like Christmas OK, but we are more Halloween people. Also, I have had no idea where I would put a tree--not even a fairly small one. And I'm picky about what would go on and don't want to invite gifts of ornaments from my partner's too-kind mother (She loves Christmas shopping!). So...usually no tree...

Until last year. My partner's mom gave us a tree and he couldn't refuse this time. It was a little, scary, fiber-optic monster. It's too small to put on the floor and too big to keep on the table. We put it out for laughs when we got it early in December. It stayed up until last week. I hated making the spot it was in bare!! The sound the motor made underneath was weirdly soothing. No telling if we'll put it out next year. I might because I'll feel bad if I don't.

A friend I hadn't talked to in years asked me what I was doing for Christmas, recalling my closeness to "the old ways", and assumed I wouldn't celebrate. I was kind of amused. I don't really consider myself anything now, but it's kind of hard to avoid some celebration of the holiday. Even some of my Jewish friends sort of celebrate! Heh, many Christians don't really think of it as a holy day.

My Christian family thinks I'm a little weird for not putting up a tree, and they are in denial about my parting from Christianity. But the whole tree thing isn't really Christian! And they know it. A lot of Christians know where it comes from, and the date of Christmas and so on...but they just can't resist! And some can. But I think of the pagan aspects as a celebration of one's heritage if of European descent. And if one isn't from such a line, well, it's fun!
