I think it is offensive because it gives the idea that once the "trap" is sprung, it will be bad. It described an undesirable.
How many of you are offended by the term trap?

It is not an acceptable term at all. Totally offensive.
11/18/2012
it's a vile, transphobic term.
11/19/2012
Never heard it.

I've only heard of that in erotica/porn, and since people were *looking* for that stuff (obviously) I didn't get offended, since it's arousing to them. Now a general person using it in a hateful way as in "Oh no," rather than "I <33 trap comics" would be offensive.

I think it's a messed up term - it perpetuates the stereotype of trans* folks as predatory and deceitful, and can be used as justification for violence against them (look up "trans panic defense").

I've never heard the term used myself

I totally agree. I think it's definitely got negative and predatory connotations, and I'm offended by it.

It's a very offensive term in my book.

It has negative connotations that trans people are all tricking people into having sex with them.

It depends on context? But generally, I don't like it.

I've recently been chatting in a lot of chatrooms where men refer to crossdressers and transgender people as "traps" I'm not sure where this slang started but i've noticed Americans and Europeans of different ages using it. I feel like its a derogatory term towards those who identify or dress as women who are not biologically born that way as they are deceivers who wish to trap or ensnare straight men. I know not all the people using it realize this or consider it homophobic but in my opinion these kind of terms have a negative effect through how they may cause young people who hear these slurs to perceive cd/tg people in a bad light.

I realize that it is trans* misogynistic and trans* phobic in general, among other things, but I personally have so many trans* friends who use it in a joking way; these are people who use it upon themselves like, "ha, that's all I am." Because they say it in a joking way, I'm not entirely sure how to take it--- like it's their identity, or just a joke, or both, so I don't know how to react to it, like say, "Aww, that's not true" or "I guess," etc. Because of that I feel very desensitized to the term, but also recognize its oppressive power and am alert/like "do you know what you're saying?" immediately when I see it used, and if it's just someone defining themself then I'm like, "Okay."

This is a new term to me, I've never heard of it. From the sound of it though I don't think I like it.
