I think what really bothers me about the "gold star" thing is that I view the LGBTQI spectrum as an umbrella of those who don't fit society's expectations and I think that too much differentiation (and possible fighting) within the community can lead to issues that would be detrimental for all.

If I hear the phrase "gold star" one more time, I'm going to lose it.

It really hacks me off as a bisexual-identified person. It just feels like suggesting that one of the binary ends of the spectrum are somehow "better than" the fluidity of the middle...

I can see how it might be annoying, and I feel like Gold Star isn't completely defined as that.

The only time I ever hear it used is people complaining about it or as a joke.

I am sitting here staring at my screen in utter and total bewilderment.
I am afraid the term "gold star" refers to school, and I use it often with my students. I also use the term with my neice and my nephew and all my young cousins. I also use the term with friends and family in North America and never once have they mentioned anything other than it meaning a job well done.
I've never seen or heard any reference to "gold star" having anything other than school related meaning.

I'm a gold star, but I wish there were another term that didn't denote such an air of superiority. Everyone's experience is valid, and to suggest I'm "gold" for never having been with a man is absurd.

I think it's simply a bad way to identify people, so the phrase annoys me.

The thing is, there are people in the queer community who do indeed see gold star lesbians are superior to others, and more "pure" in a sense. I personally dislike the phrase because I've seen it tied to that sort of elitism.

Never have heard that before

I think it's silly that people think you're a "better" or "worse" lesbian/gay dude for whether you've experienced the opposite gender.

I don't really like it, but I don't know a lot of people who use it seriously.

i am aware of the phrase, i just take in humor and move on

I hate the hierarchy within the community. I haven't fucked a guy, big fucking deal. Doesn't mean I never will and if I do it doesn't make me any less queer.

It doesn't bother me. I have nothing to hide, and I'm okay with saying who I've slept with. Some of my friends were asking each other who was gold star or not.. and it actually led to some good conversation about how we all came to terms with our sexual orientation (several friends aren't gold star because our culture encouraged them to try so hard to be straight). I guess it doesn't bother me because its led to closer friendships by discussing it. We have no judgement about it though.
