One's flat and one's short, if I have my terminology right.

What is not shown here is what I see many of now. Modified. Either post surgery or after piercing. Either way, shapes can change.

Normal
These nipples protrude a few millimeters from the areola at their regular state, but protrude further upon arousal, temperature changes, or tactile stimulation.
Flat
Flat nipples are not everted at their normal state. They are just like they sound: Flat; blending into the areola. Flat nipples will protrude, albeit less so than "normal" nipples, upon stimulation, temperature changes and arousal. Flat nipples have the ability to turn into "normal" nipples when breastfeeding draws them out.
Puffy
Puffy nipples have most of the same characteristics of "flat" nipples, the only difference being that in "puffy" nipples, the areola is raised up off the breast.
Inverted
Inverted nipples occur when the lactiferous ducts do not get properly stretched during puberty. Inverted nipples have a dimpled appearance, folding into the areola. Much like with flat nipples, inverted nipples can be drawn out from the body either through cosmetic surgery, breastfeeding, nipple shields, or sex toys like nipple clamps, all of which loosen up the tissue. There are three subcategories, or "grades," of inverted nipples. less

Mine have always been flat which used to make me feel abnormal until I found out people have all different types of nipples.

I've seen double nipples (two nipples on one areola) and both produce milk, albeit from the same breast. These often look like the top of a heart. I've also seen "supernumerary nipples" which are "extra" nipples, usually under the arm or on the underside of the breast on the "milk line" of the body. They can even be on the body and torso.
We tell women to leave these nipples alone (as many have no actual nipple pore for milk to exit) and use small ice packs and they eventually stop producing milk in that area.
Nipples can also appear anywhere from the back, to behind the knee to the bottom of the foot. less

I have puffy nipples, and I love em! I've heard that females are embarrassed about having puffs and they try to make their nipples hard to make it less noticeable, but they should feel good about them.
12/12/2012
Very interesting
12/12/2012
I think mine are short.

My wife has normal nipples and slightly bigger than a silver dollar areolas. Her nipples can become quite long, but they are proportional with her DD's. Like stated above, her nipples on smaller breasts might be considered long nipples. The main difference I see is that long nipples look more like a symmetrical tube with a flat end surface, where my wife's nipples are wider at the base then narrow to a rounded tip.
Let me throw my two cents in with other similar statements. The word normal just doesn't fit as it implies other nipple types are abnormal. All nipples are beautiful no matter what size and type.

This is super interesting! I am kinda sad that no one selected "Long Nipple" yet though. I'd love to have 'normal' or 'long' nipples. Sexy! But then, all breasts are great!

I'd say I have normal nipples... I think... lol
05/21/2013
I think mine are a mix between puffy and short, but my boyfriend thinks they're puffy and normal. I dunno lol, maybe I'm a mix between all three.

My wife's are normal; mine are short. All nipples are awesome.

I really think this is a good discussion: not really relative to anything but still fun and site-appropriate... anyways i have short little nipples... i dont know why.. it just is!

I have normal, slightly puffy when they aren't erect, nipples....but I do have an extra one. It falls in the milk line on my rib cage below my right one. It's smaller, and different looking than the others, resembling more of a birthmark or mole. It didn't produce milk or cause issues for either kiddo during nursing, but it did get darker and a bit different during pregnancy. I like it, and find it a cool oddity to have.

Normal with large aerolas

Normal, short nipples.
