Vary your rhythm and or pressure and note his reactions, and of course talk to him about it if you have a problem with it.
I don't think men and women are so different that what pleasures you in terms of rhythm and pressure won't roughly do the same for him.

I used to be with someone who was terrible for this. So whenever he would do it, I would just stop and not continue until he let go. Eventually he quit.

I'm surprised to see that so many people dislike this. I agree that it isn't something that should take place in all sessions but I think there is a place for it. Out of my very small selection of partners, I have found it hard to convince them to even try a little bit of forceful head holding.
I agree though with above comments about communication though. A simple talk would probably solve this (if it doesn't and the guy has no care for your preferences, something is really wrong anyway). I think forceful head holding could be very easy to do without even realizing it.

Depending on the mood we are feeling (particularly D/s mood), it is perfectly acceptable. Sometimes he pulls my hair for me to go faster or deeper. Never extremely forceful, more playful.
