Sex Fact: Kegel Exercises

Contributor: Kayla Kayla
Kegels can really change the pleasure you receive from sex as well as the strength of your orgasm. There are several muscles that exist in the perineal group (in the genital region), but the two big muscles are the pubococcygeus muscle and the bulbocavernosus muscle. Both muscles contract during pleasure and an orgasm. Dr. Arnold Kegel discovered these pelvic exercises made women less likely to suffer from incontinence, and the women found out other “side effects” including stronger orgasms or being able to orgasm more easily.

Kegel muscles can be exercised by squeezing those same muscles that stop the flow of urine – except when you're not peeing. For women, there are extra props to help strength the vaginal muscles including vaginal barbells and vaginal balls (such as the Je Joue Ami.)

Kegels aren't just for women either. In men, stronger kegel muscles can lead to stronger erections, greater stamina, farther spurts, and more intense orgasms. Looks like kegels are a good choice for all.

I do kegels, but don't use any kind of a toy. I do have one on my wish list though. I notice that it definitely can help me reach climax when I squeeze, in fact, I always squeeze them when I'm getting close, and that helps me finish.

After delivering my first baby he did some major damage to me down there.. 32 stitches worth of damage. As soon as he was a week old I started doing the Kegels. Once I mastered those I began to learn the groups and the muscles by group learning how to control each one alone. I still find myself doing Kegels with a twist every day it has become a habit.
All my practicing has led me to be able to bounce my whole body with just those muscles. I can contract one side and not another, do all kinds of neat tricks with them now.. it also helped to have that control when I delivered 2 more children later.
Hubby definitely appreciates the time I put into practicing those muscles.

I do exercises both with and without a prop. The biggest difference I've found is from paying some extra time and attention to that part of my body. I find it easier to let my mind wander down to my pelvic region from excersising the muscles down there regularly. Also I find engaging them helps me to orgasm sometimes.

I do them all the time, mostly with prostate massager's like the Aneros Progasm. Sometimes I just do them when peeing. Doing them has allowed me to 'shoot' farther/harder and to hold back longer.

About a year ago I was having some problems with my urinary tract. I could not hold back from urinating and was getting up like every 30 min. at night. Doing Kegels has eliminated the problems I was having and I feel like I have more control now. A big plus for me.

You have to tell us more about this. This is fascinating.

For whoever said they didn't notice a change - it took me about 2 months to notice a difference in orgasm intensity. If I slack off and stop doing them for a week or two, it feels like I quickly start to regress back. So keep with it.

I exercise my Kegels during masturbation sessions with a dildo. That extra squeezing not only hepls my Kegels but adds to my pleasure. I also squeeze during PIV sex, my b/f loves the sensation and I do as well.
I have played with "balls" in my vagina but not successfully...

I have an Emigi and I love it. It really makes a huge difference.

Its funny that this is the topic for this weeks Sex Fact. I was just arguing with a girl I know over the weekend that there are indeed benefits to doing Kegels.

Whether or not I use sex toys to kegelcize really depends on my mood. I'm finicky about things inside of me.

Contracting and releasing my muscles during masturbation and sex just sort of came natural to me before I'd ever heard of kegelcizing. I was flabbergasted when my husband told me not all woman (and not many he'd been with) did that. I mean, not that there's anything wrong with that. I just have a habit of forgetting not everyone does things the same way I do.

I never really actively exercised my muscles beyond masturbation and sex until I started reviewing toys, though. And my orgasms have definitely intensified.

That surprises me, too, that not all women flex and release during sex. I automatically did that when I first started having sex and thought that it was simply instinctual. Now that I know that not all women do this, I'm curious to know whether men like or dislike this because when clenching, it disrupts the thrusting action for a bit.

I have always wondered about the whole kegel thing. I have not, knowingly practiced. I suppose it is because I have never actively talked about it with anyone and as far as I know I don't know anyone that does them. Eden is the first place I have seen it talked about and it has my curiousity piqued.

Thanks for the extra resources that I can explore, to learn more.

Kegal exercises can also help to prevent prolapse of organs supported by the pelvic floor.

"Pelvic floor (pelvic support) disorders involve a dropping down (prolapse) of the bladder, urethra, small intestine, rectum, uterus, or vagina caused by weakness of or injury to the ligaments, connective tissue, and muscles of the pelvis

Pelvic floor disorders usually result from a combination of factors. Being pregnant and having a vaginal delivery may weaken or stretch some of the supporting structures in the pelvis. Pelvic floor disorders are more common among women who have had several vaginal deliveries, and the risk increases with each delivery. The delivery itself may damage nerves, leading to muscle weakness. The risk of developing a pelvic floor may be less with a cesarean delivery than with a vaginal delivery.

Obesity, chronic coughing (for example, due to a lung disorder or smoking), frequent straining during bowel movements, and heavy lifting can also contribute to pelvic floor disorders. Other causes include disorders of nerves to the pelvic floor, injuries (including those due to surgery), and tumors. Some women have birth defects that affect this area or are born with weak pelvic tissues. As women age, the supporting structures in the pelvis may weaken, making pelvic floor disorders more likely to develop." - Merck Manuals

I learned about Kegels when I was pregnant with my first child. However, I also would tighten up during sex before that, for both his pleasure and mine. It just seemed instinctual to me, too.

I have a set of Smart Balls, but I Kegel WAY more than I use my balls. I Kegel every day, several times a day. It takes no equipment to start, just start tightening the muscles for a few seconds, let them go and do it again. I don't count anymore, but I did when I first started doing them.

I've done Kegels for almost 20 years before I even knew there were things like Kegel-size balls, and women all over the planet do them either with an exerciser or without.

I have noticed some increase in orgasm intensity, but it's usually inconsistent. Orgasms usually are not always the same intensity anyway.

I just want to say you don't have to have had a baby to Kegel. It's good for women and men to do. And you can do them anywhere and no one knows.

One thing to remember, use the Urine Flow Stop Technique to find your Kegels, but don't keep using your urine flow to do them.

This is from the Mayo Clinic

You can also try to stop the flow of urine when you urinate. If you succeed, you've got the basic move. Don't make a habit of starting and stopping your urine stream, though. Doing Kegel exercises with a full bladder or while emptying your bladder can actually weaken the muscles, as well as lead to incomplete emptying of the bladder — which increases the risk of a urinary tract infection.

I do this sort of "stop the urine" clenching routine with great frequency myself, mostly while sitting in large conference rooms for extended periods of time.
I just wrote about this!

I am an irregular exercisier. I get these bouts where I do kegels everyday then I stop. I haven't had any children yet, and my kegels are actually pretty strong (I can push my guy out during sex). After I have kids I will probably get crackin.

I learned and started doing them when I was pregnant with my first, too. I didn't get any sort of kegal balls until several years later, but they were cheap and I didn't like using them.

I now have a few different exercisers; Smartballs Duo, Je Joue Ami, and the Vr1. I have the Emigi and Luna Beads on my wishlist. I too do them without more often that with, and on a daily basis, but these are still fun to have.

I can't really say that I've noticed a difference in orgasm, because I started doing them years before I even had an orgasm

I haven't really done much for kegel exercises. I feel like as a younger woman, that they might not be as beneficial. But who knows?
I find myself occasionally playing around with them, but I've never gotten any toys for them.
