I think if you're parenting, you may want to hold off on this one. I remember there was lots of talk when I was in middle/high school about thongs, and seeing thongs when you sat down, and really this is not appropriate in that setting.

At least make your kids buy them with their own money, and encourage them not to wear it to school!

I honestly don't care as long as they aren't flashing it about or telling everyone.
if they are purposefully making it to wear they stick out in a sexy fashion, no they shouldn't be wearing them.
