Hey everyone, so the question is pretty simple - no fuss, no muss. Do you speak Spanish and how fluent are you? Please answer honestly and elaborate on any schooling/degrees you may have! Thanks!

Sadly, I cannot.

This is a bit of a halfway for me. I can understand and write it much better then I can speak it. Half of my family is hispanic and my father spoke spanish only until his mid 20's. I never picked up on sentence structure since so much of it is kind of reversed.

If I had kept practicing, I would be able to answer that I can write it and read it fairly well but I cannot speak it to save my life. I get tongue-tied and words come out sounding terribly, terribly wrong.

Yes to all three questions. It is my native language and I was forced to take a year of Spanish in High School. I forgot to vote "Yes" on the last question

Living in New Mexico I know some basic terms, like food, places, basic furniture, etc. My boyfriend took it for 3 years in high school and still only speaks it a bit better than I can!

I don't speak spanish.

I took three years of it, but learned infinitely more living in a Puerto Rican community for a few years. I am FAR from fluent - wish I was. I can even cook up yuca, pozole, or platanos maduros! The only thing I'd be qualified to translate would be a cookbook.

I barely know any spanish

I took Spanish for four years in high school and had a friend from Mexico--I am rusty at it but used to read and translate english to spanish for her....

I took a lot of Spanish in middle school and high school, so I used to be very proficient. Unfortunately I've become really rusty since I've gone to college

I know a few works, THANK YOU DORA!

I speak some.
01/21/2013
I speak like two words.
01/21/2013
no I do not
01/21/2013
I have taken a few years of spanish, so I can speak a bit.
01/21/2013
Took two years of spanish in high school but I don't remember enough of it to say I'm anywhere close to fluent.

I've worked as a professional translator / interpreter for about 15 years. My target language is Spanish, and I have a Masters in linguistics.

I understand only a few words in Spanish and speak even less. I've picked up some of it from our Spanish speaking customers at work, but not enough to say a whole sentence. Mostly numbers and colors.

No hablo Inglés.

I speak, read, and write Spanish. I occasionally translate professionally and frequently communicate with neighbors, friends, and lovers in Spanish. I have had several lovers that ONLY spoke Spanish. I grew up learning it and have taken and taught it privately up to the university level. I'm considering making my own website multilingual.

This is an interesting question, Stormy. Why did you ask?

I know enough to get by sometimes. Took 5 yrs of it in school, but was never very good. I learned more working in a restaurant with Mexicans using it daily than I did in school.

I learnt Spanish at school, but nowhere near to a level of fluency, and by now I only remember bits and pieces.

I have a few reasons, all of which if I told you I'd have to kill you. Just kidding. We do things like this occasionally to take the temperature of the community, so to speak.

Wish I could speak spanish
01/22/2013
I can understand some words and phrases. I can mostly pick it up from spoken word better than written word. I learned most of it from working in a restaurant though.
01/22/2013
Nope!
01/22/2013
I can read, speak, and understand a fair amount. I learned it from my friends and coworkers.
01/22/2013
I only know a few words.
