What would you do with a smelly replacement for unexpectedly smelly merchandise?

Contributor: ap-the-aper ap-the-aper
I had ordered a Je Joue Ami about three weeks ago. When it arrived, there was a strong, industrial plastic sort of smell to the toys. This was a concern to me as all the reviews I read for the Ami said that they *had* no smell. So, I arranged to have them replaced to the tune of $12 in shipping. I got my replacements yesterday, and these *also* have the same strong, industrial plastic smell.

So, I'm left with a conundrum. Do I try to get yet another replacement (making the total amount of money sunk into this purchase $62)? Do I try to get a refund (which would make it a total actual refund of $14)? Do I air them out for a while and see if the smell goes away on its own? Or do I take my chances using them anyway? What do you folks think?

The smell could be coming from the packaging. I would air them out, give them a good scrubbing, then air them out again. I've had toys that smelled awful when I took them out of the packaging, but after washing and air drying them the smell went away.

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to say. Mine didn't have a smell right out of the box, so I'd air yours out for a while after a good scrubbing and see what happens.

Could be the material, sometimes there is a smell at first.

You could definitely return them if you wanted to, Eden is fantastic with that stuff.

I say air them out (: the smell could be from the packaging.

The Ami should not have a scent since it's silicone - like others have said, it's probably from the packaging. Through use and airing it out, the smell should go away.

Good luck!

Mine had a plastic smell at first, but it went after a few washings. It wasn't very strong though, and was only noticeable when I put my nose right up to it.

JeJoue has its products in a plastic mold/shelf in the box that is shrink wrapped for safety. This means no air can circulate. If you just wash and air you will see it will be gone in no time.

I've never had this problem at all with silicone. So everyones advice to you seems right to me.

If you ever get certain jelly toys (not all). I've had to wash the toy repeatedly and air out for weeks before it stopped making me ill to touch or smell it!

I have a REAL issue with smelly toys, so if I can not get rid of the smell (or if it is defective, doesn't work as expected, or turns out to be hazardous to use) and if it cost me more than $20, I ask for a refund or exchange. If it was less than that, I toss it.

I only put a dollar figure on it because to return things, it takes at least 30 minutes to mail a package at the Post Office(the post office line is out the door from open 'til close where I live).

Also, if you purchased this from EF, return shipping costs you nothing. You only pay shipping once when buying/returning/excha nging from EF. Gotta love Eden!

I would wash them and let them air out. Seems a shame to waste all that money...

I would wash it up really good, use it, and wash it again. I bet the odor will be gone then.

I would try washing and perhaps boiling them as well, then airing them out.

Wash them with baking soda-it helps neutralize odors.

If I get something that smells, I wash it very good and let it air-dry then let it air out. Most of the time the smell goes away.

EdenFantasy offers free shipping on all RETURNS; go to their return policy or call their 1-800 phone number. I'd order a replacement and until something works, just keep returning. I have the same problem with the strong, chemical smell and have returned them before. Make sure you do so BEFORE the 60 days from purchase is up. Good luck in finding something that is satisfying to both your nose and you

The FREE shipping on returns is a great policy; it's hard to find on most other adult toy sites.

That's a big loss to just get a refund. Plus the chances are, the next one will smell too.
I'd air out and wash them regularly. With a number of washes, the smell should hopefully fade.

I agree with Dusk - giving them a boil (as long as they are full silicone) should help a lot!

That's not fully correct. Yes, returns within the US have free shipping, but if you have to return an item from overseas - you do it at ya own cost!

My LayaSpot was REALLY smelly when I got it. that was forever ago and not quite silicone but it was odd. No one else had an issue like that. I figured it was cause it was in the UPS truck and I was living in Texas at the time. Breeding ground for stank. I washed it several times and let it air out to good effect.

Actually, if you are international it is not free. That is for US only.

How odd! My Ami has no smell...certainly not an industrial type smell!

I have the Ami, and the G-Ki and the MiMi from Je Joue and they all had that gross smell when I got them.

If you let them air out for about two days, the odor'll be gone. It's from the plastic shell thing that it's packaged in. If you wash it thoroughly and toss out the packaging, it'll be totally odorless.

Update: Thank you all for your suggestions I've aired them out and the smell is gone. I feel a little stupid for returning my first set, but live and learn, right?

That is what i usually do - wash it, let it sit outside the box - see what happens - the reason of the smell is almost always the package!

Air them out and scrub them. The smell should go away, if not, I wouldn't use them...just to be on the safe side.
