When I talk about this web site I usually say "Eden Fantasy." If the company changed their url many people I talk to might miss the link. The spelling isn't concerning, it was a business decision.

This is super interesting. I never really wondered about it, but I'm glad I know now!

I am really glad to hear the history, and I'm looking forward to more.
I totally hate the spelling, though, and when I refer friends I just say "this awesome website---I'll send you a link because you'll spell it wrong otherwise."
And I type the url so often that now when I'm typing about my fantasies I spell it with a "y"---my fingers' memory absorbs mistakes! I am actually really glad that I read that Fred has edenfantasies .com set up to redirect, because now I can type it right and not have to have my blood pressure spike every time I want to visit.
I really hate that I'm a grammar nazi, by the way, I'm trying to work on it, and I don't call other people out on their mistakes unless they ask me to. But boy, it runs deep.

For the record---I've got a grammatical rod up my ass, AND I went to public school. So they're definitely not incompatible!

Welcome to EdenFantasys: The History Of A Sex Shop, we will be providing you with a new chapter of Eden's history every other week. We hope you enjoy!
EdenFantasys is a name which has brought some snickers, but also recognition to this amazing place that many of us call a home away from home. Many people wonder about this, "Why did they misspell such an easy word?", "Why don't they change it?", "Was this just a typo that was never corrected?"; these are all perfectly reasonable questions, but what may surprise many of you, is that there was a lot of thought put into the spelling of EdenFantasys. This topic was discussed in an interview with Fred Petrenko, the company's founder and President, here is what he had to say about the decision to use the name EdenFantasys:
"In retrospect, the name is something of a weak link. We have "Eden Fantasy" and "Eden Fantasies" all registered too. We've noticed, however, that very many people when typing in the name do make the typo "-sys". After a year or two of deliberate discussions, we settled on "EdenFantasys". Here are a few of the reasons that were cited back then (2002):
1. people obviously WOULD notice the misspelling. Back then, we badly wanted to be noticed no matter what—even for being grammatically incorrect;
2. everything around us that had anything to do with Internet business had "system" in their names. I suppose this was considered cool in 2002/3, and we wanted to be cool too. Who doesn't? I think if we were starting Eden today, we would've called it "EdenFantasy2.0";
3. and — yes, quite a lot people do type "fantasys", believe it or not—don't ask me why!"
In fact the misspelling of a name is a very popular, and in many cases a very intelligent tactic used by companies in order to set themselves apart from the competition. Jennifer Slegg, a Search Engine Marketing Consultant talks about the benefits of bidding on misspellings of your company name in this article.
EdenFantasys falls under the misspelled name category along with some other great companies like Digg, SyFy, flickr, Google and Topix.
So what do you think? Did they make the right decision back in 2002?

I am so glad I found this, eagerly waiting for the next installments!

I'm actually really glad this got bumped. I had always wondered about that misspelling, and even wondered if it was an accident or was on purpose. But the reasons for doing it make perfect sense now that I read them. That was really fun, getting to know a little of the history of this place! Thanks!
06/17/2011
It's always bothered me (but just a little) that I didn't know how to pronounce "Eden Fantasys" - is it, "Eden Fantasies" or "Eden Fanta-sis"? At least that's been clarified and I'll be able to sleep again
06/17/2011
I loved the little background info.
09/20/2011
I have always read it as "Eden's Fantasy." I guess my mind just moves the S around to make it more correct.
09/20/2011
The name still totally squicks me every time but I don't mind it. It's a great place, so who cares?
09/22/2011
Cool story! And I really do mean that.
12/10/2011
Very interesting!
12/10/2011
I think the name makes this place more memorable!
12/11/2011
I always wondered why it was misspelled, now I know
