Reviewers Spotlight - An Announcement and Feedback

Contributor: Ansley Ansley

Hey guys, as you may have noticed the Reviewers Spotlight usually goes up on the first Thursday of the month. With the holidays fast approaching and the number of activities we have planned, we thought it would be a great idea to put the spotlight on hold for a little while and get feedback from the community.

The criteria for who is chosen boiled down to how long a person had been in the community, how well they write reviews, and their overall popularity.
However, there was very little input from the community about who was selected and ultimately came down to the person's availability.

How should contributors be chosen for the spotlight? Popularity? Rank? Activity on the forum?

How long should the spotlight last? One week, two weeks, one month?

How often should the spotlight be held? Once a month? Once every other month?

We're all ears so bring us your suggestions!

I think a combo of those things. Someone who writes good reviews, is active in the community, and someone who at least doesn't piss people off all the time. lol I don't think popularity should play too much a role in it. Then it gets too high school-y.

If you hold it once a month then I would have it last the month. That gives everyone the opportunity to ask questions.

Hmmmmmmm I happen to think it would be kind of amazing if the winner of the Contributor of the Month could sit in the hot seat and be grilled mercilessly about who they are, and why they are here! Doesn't that sound like fun??

Possibly the spotlight could be just a couple of weeks to keep it fresh? One contributor chosen by the community and then one member of staff? I can see a time when new members of the community could be spotlighted, welcomed and probed;you know, like the aliens do! That'd draw in all the real interesting people if they know there is probing involved...

I think all of the criteria should be available: rank, milestone, activity, basic interest, new blood, anyone who stands out...and the ones who prefer to hide in the shadows. Let's yank them out and inspect them! (Only if they are willing, mind you.)

Love you! I like the COTM idea. It was in my list of notes but I didn't want to lead anyone's answers right off the bat, nice to see that in your response.

I agree that it shouldn't be a popularity contest, but a mixture of things. I also like community and staff picks.

Also, I would like it if the Spotlight rotated more often. Even if they are only picked once a month, rotate them every week, so when I go Community Page, the same three reviews aren't there for the whole month. Just my .02. Thanks! xoxo

I think it would be pretty interesting to select three candidates for the Reviewers Spotlight.

One community vote, suggestions for one week from members followed by a vote.

One staff choice based on site activity and helpfulness.

And the COTM.

With three candidates, it would take the hot seat off one or two people and make it more spread out, give everyone a chance to get to know the Reviewers and also adds a special bonus for the COTM. It would also keep the thread fresh and interesting.

I think this is a great idea, 3 different people talking about why they are members and what they enjoy on the site would be great.

I always enjoy reading what the people have to say in the spotlight even if I can't think up of new questions to ask. This helps the community as a whole learn more about other community members. I have friends on here that don't write reviews, so don't make the requirements just be upon rank because that would exclude them and they're frequent on the forums.

This is a very good point. One that I think should be seriously weighed because some of our most unique and interesting contributors aren't really into the review process but they still contribute a fair amount both in having interesting things to say and helping others learn the ways of Eden.

Should rank really be a factor?

I really like the idea of people having to nominate folks. My hopes are that it won't be the same people nominated every month.

I also had the idea of building a master list of people who were interested in participating. We could either then hold a vote and say the top three will be spotlighted or just run through the list alphabetically.

I think the same rule should apply - a yearly rotation, you can't be spotlighted more than once every twelve months.

Thoughts?

I don't think rank should really be a factor in all this since like you and unfulfilled mentioned, it would leave out some great folks.

I like the master list of people who are interested. Not everyone who reviews may want to participate.

On the flip side, I think rank should play only a very small part. I know a lot of great people who don't review but help out a ton in the forums. They should get a shot as well.

I don't necessarily think it should, especially because (to me anyway) it means a lot less than it used to. Rank doesn't make someone a great reviewer or a poor reviewer, it's really just about how many reviews someone's written at this point.

But I love reading all the different ideas for how to pick new reviewers!

I think all reviewers ought to be in the selection pool; I hate the high-school-popularity thing, so that's not an option. the selection process needs to be simple; 1 staff member is a good idea; COTM is a great idea too

Naw interest should be the only factor...hell let's make it like a shooting gallery where anyone could be picked and then grilled like a BBQ steak! We will probe them and strip them bare. C'mon you KNOW that would be funner than hell.
I think some of these wonderfully active but not reviewing people should be looked at under the microscope of public interest...in this case we really DO want to know!
