I agree. Truthfully, there are many parts of the US I have not visited. Some of them do seem exotic to me.

Another strange place for an erotic story is the Holy Land. Doesn't exactly scream erotic to me. The only place I can think of that would less even less erotic would be the Vatican.
Have you ever read The Song of Solomon from the Bible? Now there's Holy Land erotica, from the Old Testament, no matter how much they claim it's metaphorical.

It's not metaphorical. And yes, I've read it...several times.

Love Song of Solomon. First erotic reading for a parochial school girl!

Yay! I'll do that.

I know the largest market for books in english is the USA, but it's always in my mind that the english speaking market includes the UK, Australia, and even parts of Asia, etc. So the inclusion of stories in american locations didn't seem odd to me.

I agree that there are plenty of places in the US that can be very erotic. My ultimate get-away fantasy is set in Hawaii. Thought that's not exactly "in" the US and probably a very typical fantasy inducing place.

Welcome and goodbye, everyone who has to leave. I was thinking about how far-flung our writing and reading community extends, right around the world, in fact. Mitzi in England had to stay up late to join us, and Cheyenne in Australia and Lisabet in Thailand couldn't make it at all, although they may check out the discussion later.

I have read it, and I found it quite wonderful. Sex appears in the Bible quite a bit, but The Song of Solomon seems like the most positive mention of in all of the Scripture. The rest of the stories I recall involve stuff like incest or people being punished for certain sexual behavior.

"My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him." (Song of Solomon 5:4) I would love to know what those who claim this is a metaphor believe it is a metaphor for?

I agree about lots of places in the U.S. being exotic if you haven't been to them...I've never been out west so that's exotic for me...and New Orleans could be exotic for anyone!

That's not quite the translation I'm reading. Where did you find that quote?

I'm Hawaiian, with relatives there. It's a magical place - definitely try to go when you can!

I've been amazed at how many writers who submit work to my anthologies are from out of the USA. They're good, too. Many from Canada and the UK, some from Australia and New Zealand, a few from Germany, and others I don't recall just now. Once I was told by a writer that she set her stories in the US because she didn't think they'd get accepted otherwise, but I'd always prefer to get authentic voices from other countries when possible, even when I have to battle the copyeditor to keep idiomatic phrases and terms that give a story it's distinctive flavor.

Along the lines of what Liz Langley just said...What is a place you consider exotic? What places do your fantasies take you?

A metaphor for "the love of Christ for his church." Foreseen, one supposes, thousands of years ahead of time in the old testament.

I'd love to go to Egypt, South of France - Provence. And the Japanese countryside. I'm part Chinese as well - but never felt the urge to go there.

I have to jump off now, but thank you all! This was so interesting, learned a lot and look forward to reading the book!

Cheers, all!
