And speaking of tennis, here's Cheyenne Blue's take on her story in the book:
Thanks for inviting me to be a part of the Naked Reader Book Club discussion. Unfortunately, the time difference with Australia means it's not possible for me today.
My story “Game, Set, and Match” is about two very different women who connect at a backyard BBQ and instead of standing around drinking beer, go and have a game of tennis. The story shows how sport can bring together people who otherwise may have little in common. The rather cynical protagonist, unwillingly spending time at her brother's suburban BBQ hooks up with a white picket fence suburbanite - exactly the sort of person she was so dismissive of earlier. While the spark was already there, tennis turned attraction into action – and the on-court battle for the upper hand is mirrored in the off-court joust for supremacy.
My favorite story in the anthology is Kristina Wright’s “Seven Minutes in Heaven”. While I love the uniqueness of each person’s encounter with Burke in the closet, what I find most intriguing is the possibility that Caroline (who orchestrated the whole game) may have deliberately cut it short. Did Burke’s loudly faked pleasure with Jeff (something she didn’t expect) make her believe she was losing control? Did Caroline actually send Benji home early so that he missed his turn with Burke? I think she did.
