Why should you care about backing up your blog? After all, that's why you have a blog, isn't it? To be able to look at your thoughts and posts later-on at a point in time? Isn't it the blog software's responsibility to make sure that your content stays safe? Is it just too
hard to back-up your blog content?
That's just it! None of the blogging platforms are responsible for lost content. It's right there in their TOS. So if there's a hack and they can't back-up your previous information (which would be unlikely, but it could happen), you might not have any of the posts that used to be on your blog anymore. However, it could have been avoided if you made sure to back-up your blog regularly.
At the same time, blogging platforms are known for deleting your blog if it contains adult content or if they receive complaints. In fact, it happened to
one of our own bloggers here on EdenFantasys. When you're in the “business” of writing sex or things that someone might deem offensive, you're going to want to make sure that you back-up your content in case something happens with your blog in the future.
Of course, if you're self-hosted, there's always the hacker that could get into your blogging system. No matter how secure blogging systems seem to be made, somebody always finds a way to hack into them. With that in mind, you want to be able to easily restore your data and content if there ever comes a time to do that. Myself, I use an easy plug-in that e-mails my back-up to me every week, so I barely have a lift a finger to keep my stuff backed-up. Even if it's a little time per week, you should definitely considered backing up your content every week or every month (depending on how often you post). So how do you do it? Well, let's find out!
